terribly sad news, i feel for his lovely wife

we met him in Progresso a few years back and he took us around and to his wife's brother's restaurant for some amazing ceviche

he was a genuine, lovely man, and was extremely appreciative of the vegemite we used to send him

i have been wondering for a while why he hadnt been on th site, and not responded to any of my messages - i thought he had just had enough of tc

sad day - thanks for letting us all know. i'm gonna get a small bottle of mescal in his honour

RIP Gavan

You're lucky to have pressed flesh and had one with him.

Only spoke to him on the phoen.

Lucky you.

Bless the fella...I too will buy a Mexcal in honour of the great man Sombrero; the Blue one.

Posted this in the wrong thread.

RIP.

We went to the footy together maybe 15 years ago now on one of his trips to Melbourne. I always had the intention to hit him up one day for a beer in his hometown now that I'm living in the US - and married to a spanish speaking Mexican-American. I recall him saying his wife was a stewardess on Mexicana (no defunct) or AeroMexico so that should solidify his lofty societal standing on here. His best mate from Tassie, Blue Beatle, very kindly/generously sent me a DVD around the time of a game I'd missed - sincere condolences to him for losing a great friend.

Oh dear.
We’ve lost another one.

Enjoyed his posts. Some posters you just look for and he was one of them.

You could just tell he was a ripping bloke who loved the Blues.
The Mexico thing just added some intrigue.

Like someone else said, funny how it hits you when someone who you have never met but is part of the fabric of this place is lost to us.
You forget you’ve been logging on here since the demise of the Blue View all those years ago and interacting with all these posters with weird usernames. Our mate let us into his world more than most.

What a shame he won’t be able to post (and post and post!) about the rebirth of the Blues. No one deserved that more than him and no one would have enjoyed it more than him I suspect.

But I’m sure he’ll be watching … and hopefully pulling a few strings

RIP

Obviously only knew him through these forums.

About 7 years ago we organised a week long trip to Mexico with another couple.
I messaged him for advice.
He was very helpful and generous with his advice.

He invited us to come to his town, and he'd pick us up and show us around for a few days. My wife and I were very excited, but the other couple were not keen.

I always thought I'd go back and meet him.

Very sad

Concur with all the thoughts expressed here. Like others, for many years his were the first words I read each morning and for the most part I found them a very enjoyable way to start the day. Clearly a great lover of the Blues over many, many years and miles. RIP BS.

RIP, Blue Sombrero

I had many fantastic debates with him and it was always fun getting up in the morning and checking TC to which there would be many many posts from him overnight.

You will be missed

Wonderful tributes Baggers.
I always liked his lengthy post game comments and missed them when they disappeared.
We never had a direct exchange but after a trip to Cuba via the airport at Mexico City I felt this tiny kinship with him (something about loving Latina women perhaps...and of course the Blues).
He is missed!

Thanks for the kind words, Bondi. I remain an avid reader of yours and the site, and following in BS's footsteps watched all but a couple of games live this year (which hasn't been good for the marriage). If we're lucky enough to find ourselves in Sydney for a Blues game, I'll hit you up.

Do it!

I wish Blue Sombrero is watching today's presser with Sayers Voss and Cook.

He would be loving this.

If its possible, then BS is watching from Blue Heaven.

Thanks CK, I was afraid this would be the reason for BS's sudden silence, gutted yet grateful that we have an answer. He will be missed! RIP

Big loss for us here

Sheesh. Haven't been here for a while but I had noticed his absence and just assumed he was busy.

He was obviously an insightful and passionate Blues fan and leaves a vacuum here.

I might have a tequila in his honour next time I get to the Happy Mexican.

RIP

(And best of health to everyone on here, including those I've uncoolly lost my shit with way back. It's easy to forget how fragile our existence can be. Stay well, stay Blues.)
