In relation to the last quarter we showed grit. No question
But it was left to the same players again
You can’t get away with that against the better teams

Playing nice footy but losing doesn’t.
I don’t care how we win as long as we do.
‘Old Carlton’ would’ve lost that. All the signs were there. But we didn’t, and closed the game out well.
Come on now. 50K to the G next week to give the boys a true home ground advantage against Port

Just lucky they are worst than us. Horrible skill, no intensity, slow down the line game plan in humid slippery conditions. Oh and go the bomb.

Serious PTSD going on.

It’s being logical
You advance to the top of the ladder with 3 or 4 decent mids
Have a look at last night
Greenwood Miller Bowes Anderson Swallow Weller all owned us except Curnow
This without a recognised ruckman
Midfield depth is one of the keys to success these days

You guys make me laugh with some of the comments made in this thread.

I agree with Keogh about their midfield group winning the battle against our midfield group. Fortunately our backs played well and were well set up.

Yeah, I think the word you’re looking for is “smashed”, you agree with that?

Conditions were aweful and I thought GCS players gave it their absolute all and played out of their skins. Thats why this win makes it so good as we usually would have folded and showing maturity.

Gibbons is our next best and is finally getting a crack in there
Cottrell showed some intensity on a wing last night
Should of played round one but guys like Setterfield and Dow O’Brien are picked because of their reputation

For years some blokes internally are overrated largely due to where they were picked in the draft
Cuningham Dow O’Brien Setterfield have been given opportunities over others and have failed. They have been giving decent long term contracts as well where a guy like Gibbons or Cottrell who to me are better players have to fight every step of the way

Teague has to play SPS in the midfield.
He was good last night but played the easy role in defence

Play Philp( another with a long term deal) Stocker Honey Ramsay see what they have got
Play Cottrell in the middle Honey on a wing

Williams back will help
Martin has been tried in the midfield but has failed so far. Give him a go there although don’t hold your breath
Kennedy is average. He has been tried there and not come up with the goods either
It’s easy to look good when you come on when everyone is rooted

The bottom line is if you have 4 consistently good mids your going nowhere.

We won the contested possessions and only lost the clearances 46 to 39, hardly a smashing.

Did you sleep through the last quarter? Our midfield generated 8 scoring shots to their 3 when the game was there to be won. How does that fit in with being smashed?

How did you like Murphy’s tackles?

Whomever selected Gibbons was a genius for looking in the state league comps don’t you think?

In relation to Gibbons you need to tell the full story
I know Andy Collins personally and he is a good judge of a footballer
He was constantly talking up Gibbons in the press miffed that no AFL club wanted him

So he was known to all and sundry
SOS didn’t pick him originally
He picked Goddard and Tom Bugg as rookie
Guess where Bugg played first
You guessed it
GWS
So don’t make out that SOS was a genius recruiter
I reckon where we finish this year will be a true indicator of the messiahs recruiting legacy

So are you claiming that SOS didn’t pick him? It’s an easy question.

Nice deflection on the other points....

Yeah he picked him
He also overlooked him initially which you didn’t point out
What Gibbons shows is don’t overlook the next level down

So what you don’t mention is that as a recruiter SOS is flexible, learnt from his mistakes and made genius selections from state leagues.

If our forwards managed to kick 16.9 would anyone be complaining about the midfield?

I counted 5 really easy goals we missed, 5. We need to tidy that up.

Oh I actually went through your last 20 or so posts
You don’t really offer much mate although you did say Setters wasn’t much chop

I just get bored with the same old stuff from you Keogh, regurgitated time and time again.

Well
With SOS
He got Gibbons right
McGovern Setterfield the class of 2018 still have time but it ain’t looking great

From the outside SOS seems to me like he is one of these guys who probably has been told how great he has been all his life
He rarely has been challenged other Jo reminding him to take out the trash

Rather than learn from his mistakes he sooks it flowers off then tips the bucket on the club on live radio

I keep posting because only one poster has addressed the midfield issue
Where is the help going to come for Walsh Cripps
Curnow

Midfield options going forward:

Kemp - injured
Carroll - Injured
Williams - Injured
Martin - Injured - I actually prefer him wing/midfield to HF but the club prefers it the other way
Philip - just back from injury
Ramsey - just back from injury
Stocker - not sure how the club feels about him though
Kennedy - think the club sees him as back up not an option

Dow - I am worried
O'Brien I am very worried

some of the above need to advance to create the depth, class, etc in the midfield we are looking for.

Anyone bagging our midfield in last nights game is way off, they managed to nullify the GC group while generating 25 scoring chances to 19, plus there was a few shots that went out of bounds.

They also managed to dominate the last quarter when the game was on the line.

Why do posters focus on the midfield group while the forwards get away without a mention?

Thanks DB
Much appreciated
Imo wins hide the cracks
Looking at our next 4 weeks we will have a clearer picture

IMVHO...the club has the problem, not the highlighted players...why?...because I also see a mountain of evidence for other players who've been given ample opportunities in the 1sts but do not play to their expectation regularly

Cunningham is another name in the mix, although I personally think it’s forward line or bust for him. He’s never looked a genuine AFL mid to me.

Fisher can go through the middle too, but it sounds like we’re trying to settle him forward.

And I think everyone except Teague thinks SPS should be a mid/forward.

It's a combination...our mid-fwd transition looks amateurish
Probably due to the decision making and execution of both groups

I agree they picked it up late
But it was our defence that one us the game
The midfield was beaten overall
We had 42 more hit outs and lost the clearances by 7
They had 14 more turnovers
That would be partly due to our pressure but also poor execution
Stoppage clearances is a big concern given our ruck dominance
39 30 their way
Port won the clearances 36 to 24 against a quality opponent and they are a better skilled team than GC
