Loved the Fish. He was our spark. Setters was very good as well. Harry was average early so it was good to see McDonald show something when Harry went off.
Doc had a shocker, Willo will have to improve and O'Brien just confirmed what I already knew. He doesn't have the physical intent required.
Loved Dow's hands around the contest. He was super creative. The one obvious thing to come out of the game? Our midfield isn't ready to move past Ed yet. When he went into the middle in the last quarter, he consistently won the ball and prevented the opposition running away with it. Something none of our other mids could do.
Such a great summary...

Cripps also had a shocker...

Pittonet did well...
Williams throws himself 100% at everything. Created a couple of goals as a result... Not sure that we want him defending the aerial ball...

Disappointing that we didn't seem to have a set up at kick outs??

This is a gift in the game (Huddo said in the last quarter that it would be great to see what Saad could do if someone blocked for him.... Yes.... It would!!!)

Saints mostly waltzed out of the middle... Winning or pushing it out...
They also went for a short kick on a first posession out of the stoppage... We ran forward and left the receiver free... every time....

Plenty to fix...

Go Blues

Both posts great insight.

Hope we can fix a few things.

I thought saints looked like a top 4 team and we did well to hang in the contest and in the end nearly snatched it. Said it earlier you could see the super fit Ed was gassed.

Ed is special.

Haven’t followed your stuff closely enough to know for sure, but I assume you’re taking the piss here? That’s the worst he’s played in a navy guernsey.

I keep hearing how bad he is for the money he is paid.

It's done. Front loaded. I'm not taking the piss.

We all see things differently.

I will have another look at the game over the weekend. Maybe I missed a few things he didn't do or didn't do right. I liked all the things he did do right.

They are trying to make Cripps into a forward. He doesn't look comfortable down there. He went running into the forward line in the first quarter, but was worried about the kick so did a weird handpass to a teammate instead. Play him to his strengths, he doesn't need to carry the whole team AND the forward line as well, let him enjoy ruck-roving or other midfield roles.

Ruck-rover, changing to centre or little runs on the wing ...that is where he should be. I don't think he is ready yet for a forward role. Maybe in a year or two, but I wouldn't force it on him.

They are probably trying to get him 30% forward 70% midfield/ruck-rover..
I would cut it down to 10-20% for a cameo role on the forward line. Less pressure.

Can't play SPS, Docherty and Saad in the same back half. All three trying to play the same role with zero accountability.

Saad's first half manning Billings at the stoppages, in particular, was poor. He got lucky twice where Billings got goal side and a teammate put a block on Saad, only for a ruck free kick and a smothered kick instead.

Get the feeling we'll continue to persist with this for about half the year, because we'll smash crap sides on the rebound, despite getting torn up by sides who have a decent inside 50 set up.

Liked O-Mac's game. First time I've seen him as a forward, think he can play the Levi role pretty well - showed a lot more urgency when he presented high up the ground, and there's probably a slight upside to his ruckwork. He's certainly ahead of Moore. I'd have him in for round 1 with the injury concerns.

Don't think Murphy is a certainty for round 1 either.

Did not get to see the game tonight, will watch it tomorrow.

Is Williams in trouble with the MRO?

That would be a miracle.

They'll (wrongly) give him every chance to reach 300.

Pros:

Jones and Setterfield were my best.
Walsh, Williams and Pittonet.
Fisher and Murphy look really dangerous.
Dow's hands were exceptional. Building nicely.
2nd half of SOJ and Saad.
1st half of McDonald.
Nice flashes from LOB, apart from that awful effort in a marking contest in the opposition goalsquare.

Cons:

It'd be nice to get through a game with a couple of tall forwards.
I know it was only a practice match, but how often do we seem to go into games only concerned with how we want to play, and giving no attention to the opposition? We lost the game because we refused to leave a defender behind the ball, and allowed them to score easy goals out the back.
I know we were short on tall forwards, but the entries into forward 50 were terrible. Kept kicking it to opposition defenders.
Apart from Jones, defence were pretty average. Docherty got a lot of it, but absolutely butchered it.
Fair bit of flopping and lunging from Saints forwards. Also holding the ball only seemed to be paid against us.

Fair summation. Docherty is a worry. Very slow and dreadful kicking. In fact our foot skills are very poor overall. SPS an exception.

Still early with much to improve on.

Watched the game again.... disposal efficiency, leaking goals over the top far too many times, stoppages are primary concerns

Setterfield, Walsh, Fisher are terrific players.

Crippa not winning stoppages then leave him forward he is always a threat.

VFL having praccy game today... disposal efficiency and monstering stoppages would be the player elevated to play Rd1.

Stoppages are Barker. He has been with us for far too long and still we persist and get nowhere. I'm trying to be positive, as it's only a practise game but the signs are all there!!!

I feel like we’ve over corrected from the Bolton years and are playing too offensively minded. Admittedly, I haven’t seen a live game since late 2019, but on TV we look caught out of position on the rebound far too often.

I won’t go too hard too early, but I’m not impressed with what we’ve seen in the practice matches. We weren’t convincing against Essendon* (likely bottom 4) and we never troubled the Saints (likely top 4).

It would be nice to have some luck with injuries at some stage too.

Killed out of the centre.
So hard to win games when the opposition gets quality possessions from the centre bounce.

Just looking at pure numbers - centre clearances were fairly close (17 to 20), but we got smashed at the stoppage clearances (18 to 30) despite winning the tap outs (40 to 37). Adding to this, it seemed like the quality of St Kilda’s clearances was consistently superior to ours.

After watching the replay, I fully agree. Not impressed with the skill level, tackling and structures.

I am clinging on to the view that we (& all clubs) will tighten up our game style come rd 1

I think the big take away from the game, from a Carlton perspective, was that Fisher, Silvagni and Dow look like stepping up in 2021. Certainly Fisher looks like he has definitely gone to a higher level.

Jack will never be a genuine key forward but as a third forward he has the skill and effort.

And I thought Dow's hands and handballing were excellent last night. His work in traffic - clean hands, quick and correct decision making, good execution - were very, very good.

On the downside, while the defence was under siege much of the night, I nonetheless think the back six still make too many mistakes and lack hardness. Doc racked up the possessions but had too many blews for me to say he played a good game; Plowman always looks like he can be pushed off the ball too easily; and Williamson had at least 2 moments where his tackling effort looked poor. And I am still not convinced SPS is hard enough. I think toughness and limiting errors is very important down back, and I saw a lot of errors an weak efforts last night from our defence.

Also, I don't like Harry being the bail out option,. We need Levi to handle that role. Crash and bring the ball down. Harry always looks prone to injury when he goes up in big pack aerial contests, and we need him for the more creative entries as that is where his strength lies utilising his pace and reach. Really need Levi back.

Outside of that it is a shame Williams felt the need to show how tough he is. Could miss a week. Miond you , we won;'t beat Richmond anyhow.

Williamson played himself out of the round 1 team.
Silvagni played himself in.
Moore is a spud.

Pretty much.
Haven't done my round 1 team, but it will have J-SOS. Unlikely to have Willo and don't think I'd be playing Eddie or Gov either regardless of fitness.
