What did we think of McGovern in defence and Williamson on a wing? I think it’s good we tried something different. I’d like Williamson to be a bit less one sided, but perhaps he will move to a wing more permanently next year when Marchbank & Newman return to defence?

Eg. perhaps a back six next year of Plowman, Jones, Marchbank, Newman, Weitering & Docherty? With SPS & Williamson playing further up the ground?

Good that it was tried.
Felt Teague was a bit fixed in his ways this year.
I understand theory behind continuity.

Williamson's one sidedness on the last line worries me.
Ditto forwards

What happens to the backline next year when Marchbank returns?
And with the addition of Saad and Witherden?

I think SPS will pushed out and sent further upfield to compete for a spot, for a start.

Really interesting Trade period coming up.
If the above happens we don't need Williams at HB and medfield.
He can stand next to Cripps and Walsh and dish it out to the out riders

Before we console ourselves that yesterday's 10 goals 1 behind was some kind of bonus for its accurate kicking consider that it both reveals & hides two glaring embarrassments...

"Inside 50s" (37) were our 3rd worst for the year (33 v St.K, 36 v Haw)
and in the previous 10 seasons Carlton have only had LESS inside 50's on just 10 previous occasions.
(Incidentally, Bolton's teams only produced Five results with less than 37 x inside 50s in 3 1/2 years.)

Which leads to THIS:

Only TWICE in the last 25 years has Carlton had less scoring shots in a game;
sadly they were only just last year and the year before.

But just as disappointingly, in the last 100 years only 9 games have featured LESS scoring shots than this last Rd.18, 2020 match v Brisbane.

It is thus our equal 10th Worst scoring effort in 2097 games over a Century!

Image

We had ONE inside 50 in that lost 2nd quarter leaving our game tally 7-8 less than our season average.

If we apply a 'typical' accuracy score of say 6-5:41 and subtract 4 of the so-called 'free-kick' goals that Brisbane were awarded from their score to reduce it to 7.12:54 we would still have been comfortably beaten.

So...
the great 'accuracy' (as the builders motto goes with Paint) - "covers a multitude of sins"

Games are 20% shorter this year. How’s it stack up factoring this in?

Simmo deserved a 'grander' exit than that.

So glad he kicked a sausage roll though - 1st for the year.

Makes at least one goal for last 17 years!

He should have gone for goal in the first quarter too, would have lifted the entire team.

Can someone fill me in on Teague's half time reaction?

What gets me and what I want to know is why it took half time in round 18 to give the players a spray ??? Even at the presser he didn't look impressed. Did he finally realise the season was really over? The group he says that he "really believes in" has let him down big time on many occasions this year.

Even Keogh mentioned that Teague was pretty hard at it when he played (and I agree) ...... This hasn't quite translated to the playing group.

Things need to change in 2021 and it needs to start from him. Get the right 22 together (not the favs and not the old mates)

Hi, cecil89.

We averaged 17.25 scoring shots across our other games this year.
Competition average was 16.8
Carlton had more scoring shots than all teams outside 8 and WC.

So this last game against Brisbane with ONLY 11 was indeed the shocker I highlighted it to be.

btw, previous years avg. scoring shots (rounded) for Carlton...

2019: 20
2018: 18
2017: 20
2016: 20
2015: 20

we went from 20 min. quarters to 16 so the points average would do the same 20 down to 16, but until rd.18 we were doing a bit better than that.

Yep, very disappointing. Murphy might be skilled still, but we have no place for anyone not going 100% next year. That’s why we cop 5-6 goals runs, soft when the pressure comes on.

Watched the 2nd quarter replay last night wanting to see all the so called 'ducking and diving' that led to our demise.

Of Brisbane's 5 goals the first 3 were clean as a whistle

Weidering straight to Zorko to Rayner-goal
Mitch Robinson mark and goal
Mitch Robinson caught high by Martin (didn't duck) -goal
McGovern's 'spear-tackle' on Cameron WAS clearly dangerous -free kick/goal
Rich collected around the neck by Polson, was over the ball not 'ducking' free kick/goal

Around the middle of the quarter Lions had some 13 consecutive inside 50 entries, constantly rebounding coz Blues skills were atrocious.
We turned a 4 pt lead into a half-time 28 point deficit. Game over.

So as usual in these monstrous quarters this year, we simply 'necked' ourselves.

Sigh.
Can only hope they work their arses of over summer.

'Fewer', not 'less'.

Do I edit?

LESS strikes a more dramatic recognisable chord than FEWER, is why I went with it.

Grammatically, you are correct as the quantity "inside 50s" and "scoring shots" can indeed be counted.

However, did you also consider a possible error in assigning a singular 3rd person noun a plural past perfect simple use of 'have'?

Carlton have only had
v
Carlton has only had

?

The mind boggles sometimes.

Good to know there's a keen eye here somewhere.
I'll stay cautious.

Roger.

I was directly behind the goals (lower tier, and just under cover) amongst a Carlton-heavy group of supporters.

Out of curiosity, may I ask what you paid for your ticket?

$39 for me, whereas all other games this year I had paid $30.

Huh. I paid $59 for 2 row, top tier (section 50) just inside 50m arc.

Ripped off eh?

plus $6 booking fee.

Oh well.
