Excited about Philp, I reckon his speed and tackling is a great inclusion for the fight against Essendon****’s run out of the back line.

lock down job on Saad maybe?

Has the pace and from what little I've seen of him, has a bit of aggression too which I like.
However, I'd like to see a first gamer play his natural game and not sacrifice it.
I know you aren't suggesting it, but was very disappointing to see a bloke like Walker have half his career wasted because they wanted him to learn to be more defensive and took as much of his natural out of his game as possible.
If Philp is earmarked for a lockdown job this week, that's fine as long as they don't force into that type of role week in week out.

Agree with this. Walks could have one of our all time greats if we had just let him play with freedom. He should have been a pure midfielder

I don't mind the team.
It's crucial for McGovern and Casboult to bring the pill to ground and not let the Bombers defenders take marks. A mobile and fast group of players around the packs should do the job.
Once again, conversion will be the key. We saw a number of Geelong players miss relatively easy shots from with 15 metres last week but we can't rely on that every week. It's important our Inside 50 conversion is better than the opposition again. If we're 8.4 at half time instead of 3.9, we'll be a good chance again. Carlton kicked the ball around the ground last week better than I've seen for the best part of 20 years. Hope to see that again.

This is something I’m keen to learn too. Turnovers kill. You need elite users of the ball in almost every position these days.

Best wishes to the young fella

His bio refers to his kicking as "penetrating". No mention of accuracy/efficiency.

Comfortable with us going in a bit smaller and having more run this week, but as BV said puts a bit more pressure on Levi and Gov to compete. In particular Gov when Levi goes into the ruck.
We surround them with Eddie, Jack M, Cunners and Philp and they can provide relentless pressure to keep the ball locked in and we make the most of our opportunities, we should get the win.

I want Carlton to win this match more than I wanted us to beat Geelong.
Like everyone, I want to see us start the match with the same fervour and control as last week.
Win on Saturday and the three matches after that should all be winnable. But let’s keep a lid on it :smoking:

GO BLUES!

Time to show up with the hard edge and intensity we brought for the first 3 quarters against Geelong. If we can do this, we will win. Essendon* are 2-0 but haven’t beat anyone good (only Freo and Sydney). Start Martin in the middle for his grunt work. Continue to rotate Gibbons, Setters and Cunners through there. Set Ed a tagging role - he’s better with a defined task. Don’t wait for someone to get off the leash before making the move. He’s done the job on Merrett before very well so I’d be happy to see that. Think Merrett is more dangerous with ball on hand than Shiel. Again, it’ll be all about pressure. A big mental challenge for our guys because over the last 5 years good performances have been backed up with no shows. The Geelong win means a lot less if we don’t show up from the first bounce. Best of luck to Philp on debut - tackle, chase, pressure and bring your speed.

I thought the same. There was a win over Freo in Perth a few years ago under Malthouse I think, where we shared the ball & controlled the game, but apart from that I can't recall us using the ball that well, for ages. We looked like a top side for the most part against the Cats.

Sure did.

IIRC we didn't get the balls out in preseason until after Christmas a few yrs ago.

Err... you know what I mean :sly:

Agree, it was chalk and cheese....

But we also greatly increased our pressure around the ball....
and for those wanting Philp to play 'with freedom'... I think judging by the selection announcement he's there for his pressure....

BTW, he must be popular, the reception at that announcement seemed huge (or was that just my imagination?)

Go Blues

In the past Essendon* have killed us with intercept marks in our forward line. Gov and Levi have to be in every marking contest. No exceptions !

I wonder how having the week off will affect them considering there's been so little footy played as it is? Also they haven't played any scratch matches at all so Fantasia hasn't played a game since March and Gleeson since August last year. Will be interesting to see how those two run out the game.

I would rather us create space in the forward line and hit up moving forwards with short, low trajectory passes like last week

Teams only kill us with intercept marks when we resort to bombing it long into the forward line
