I expect Dow to be dropped, and Gibson and Setterfield lucky to survive, based on the round 1 performance.
They will stick with bigger bodies, and running machines.

IN: Pittenet Harry Betts

OUT: Kreuzer (foot), Fisher (foot) Dow (by an inch)

EMERGENCIES:

Philp (reckon he's on the cusp)
Kennedy (incase Jack Silvagni doesn't get up from soreness)
Williamson (who will be in if Newman ...)

reckon that's about it.

We are better than some Blues supporters suggest, the proof WAS our effort against Richmond after the first quarter.

The slow start and lack of intensity against the Tigers should have been the focus since then so I’ll be v disappointed if we don’t come out breathing fire.
But I’d also expect the Demons to come out v hard - that’s their strength w Viney, Brayshaw & Oliver feeding off Gawn.
If we can match their intensity, I think our skills and speed will lift us to victory. But without the intensity, we won’t be in the game.

There's the game in a nutshell. The middle lot.

If Gawn is the reason their mids get an armchair ride, then Pittenet has a major role to play.

Dees get done on the outside, and recent times Cripps and Oliver have gone head to head.
If Pitto nullifies the advantage hit outs to Oliver, then I'd put my money on Cripps vs Oliver on the inside, or ball already in his hands.

That leaves Viney and Brawshaw, They are not big. Ed and Walshy can start up against them.
Murphy can go in there too.

I can't wait for SPS to be in there full time, but understand if he's HB setting up play.

I'd love to see Silvagni to go in the middle too, straight to Petracca when he's there.

Fisher will be missed for his zip in the middle.

I don't care who the 4 interchange are, I believe our top 18 can easily go for 16 minutes.
No red time means no red time goals.

If the boys are ready to go from the start we will win this one...imo
Go Blues

We have to win this to maintain even a modicum of credibility in our season.
They have a decent midfield but their attack is disjointed compared to our defence. Our attack is untried in its present form but as individuals we know they can do the trick against a pretty decent pair in Lever and May if they are on their game.
Agree...
Like us, Melbourne is also a team who suffers the 3 possession curse... 3 clean, one error....
We're stronger up forward most likely, but their defence is km, our defence is better... But not sure who /how scores for them...
They're stronger in the ruck/middle but we have better outside run and maybe skills (depending on who plays)
I'd like to see LOB instead of Setters, and told to RUN!
Should be very even, I just hope we don't have too many lapses...

This will be even despite the bookies having them as strong favourites
Hopefully we win this and show we are on the improve albeit middle of the pack.... Lose and I think we're looking at bottom 4
Go Blues

Agree with your changes. Would like to see Willo played on a wing. Like his run and carry and is a pretty decent user of the ball, but doubt they'll pick him.

My concern along with others is our midfield depth or lack of it. If Gawn gets on top and gives them an armchair ride, they'll create a lot of opportunities. We do have the advantage in both our forward and defensive 50s. Weiters and Jones are awesome and the Dees will have to dominate the midfield to give themselves a chance to kcik a winning score.
Our forward line looks potent with H and Eddie back in along with Martin. I think H will have a positive impact on Gov and J-SOS who I expect will both be better than they were in round 1.
In short, I don't think we'll need as many opportunities as them to kick a winning score but still unsure we'll be able to create enough.

The shorter quarters will help our lack of midfield depth

Good point. I'd like to think that will sway things in our favour.

Also gives us less time to chase down a 5 goal first quarter deficit though

How are people feeling about this one? It's been so long I can't get a read on where we are at.

Our preseason form was woeful and there has been more spin than a Shane Warne flipper about our round 1 performance (OK we had our moments against Richmond but, let’s face it, we were smashed when the game was up for grabs).

The counter argument to this:

- we were in very unusual circumstances being the first game playing at an empty MCG. We were a bit shell shocked and the far more experienced Richmond side adapted much more quickly as you’d expect. Hard to know just how much this affected our slow start but I suspect a lot.

- Richmond got the rub of a LOT of crucial 50/50 (or even less) decisions in the first 10 mins which either cost us goals or gifted them goals. Go back and watch up to their 5th goal. We were very unlucky

- we were without our two first choice key forwards and lost out ruckman in the first quarter meaning we lost our third choice key forward to the ruck as well. After this we had next to no structure going forward as you’d expect.

- once we settled, we actually controlled the majority of the game despite the above points and actually got back within striking distance in the last quarter. We just couldn’t capitalise on our chances, in no small part due to the fact that we had no key forwards. Put Harry and Levi in the forward line and we might well have run over the top of them.

Its all a matter of perspective. But a lot of things did go against us in round one. Take out Richmonds first 3 choice key forwards and see how they go

Teams out. Looks good enough.

I just got a little excited.

Hopefully it’s not deflated in the first ten minutes and we’re four goals down.

Demons make 7 changes
Usually you would say WTF but 10 weeks plus is a long time in football.

I like the team but I think Gibbons is a chosen one.

Gibbons is a depth mid who should start on the bench IMO.

At least playing Eddie over blooding a rookie will bring a few thousand extra through the gates.

Good side apart from one more zippy player. Tad cumbersome.
