But either way I just can’t see Carlton playing Collingwood even in a poxy old elimination final (like scraps at the table) for at least 10 years. Odds against it.
That makes it 40 years of being without a Carlton vs Collingwood match in a final.
Imagine if Liverpool vs Man U in a final FA Cup, League Cup etc didn’t happen in 40 years. Crazy.
I don't think you can compare it to the two biggest English clubs. Reality is that this rivalry is a thing of the past. Matches between these two in the present day pale in comparison to the 70's, 80's and 90's - even in seasons like 1987 (1st vs 12th).
Emerging from the shutdown will be easier for an administration like Carlton's. They were already under the AFL's microscope. They trust the AFL. But they'll still be a apart of the have-not group and for the next few years will not be able to compete off-field with the likes of Richmond, Hawthorn, Collingwood and Essendon**. And as we know - if you're healthy off-field, you have a better chance of being healthy on it.
1987 1st vs 12th
1988- an epic final between Carlton and Collingwood. At least in those days both clubs were around the mark.
I agree. The Carlton vs Collingwood rivalry is a thing of the past. I doubt I will see a Carlton vs Collingwood final in my lifetime, and part of that (Even if just part) is due to the amount of teams in the competition. 18 teams! It is crazy. 18 professional teams and there are 3 other professional/ semi-professional sports competing for the same dollars..
....other reasons for Carlton's demise are Carlton's poor recruiting, poor management, arrogance etc, AFL's disdain for the Blues etc.
It is a shame the rivalry is a thing of the past.
Yet culture, history, legacy and cross-generational ties are important if you want to build passion for a sporting "product". I guess the AFL management can't see this as they limit funding to the Blues but pile the money into other clubs. Go Gold Coast!
"They trust the AFL"? Carlton trusts the AFL, why?
I don't see the reasons why they would trust the AFL.
