So the Smorgon scoreboard thread got me thinking about the other side of the oval, the Garton Street scoreboard.

As it happens it used to be run by a guy called Phil Spitalnic (not sure if I got his surname right).

He and his wife Ruth were family friends of my folks' when I was a kid (we haven't seen them in like, forver, not sure what happened there).

Anyway I got to sit in the scoreboard with him a bunch of times and it was awesome. Even got to take out and put in numbers a few times.

So the funniest thing I ever heard while sitting in that scoreboard was when an opposition supporter yelled out to SOS, who was standing in the goalsquare against the opposition's full forward (I forget who unfortunately). So he goes:

"Hey SOS, what's the difference between the goalsquare and Jo Bailey?"

...you can see SOS' head turn ever so slightly..

"Jo Bailey's much wider".

I stood in front of that scoreboard with my dad the day we played the all conquering * in 1985, & won by 9 goals. Ken Hunter 5 goals IIRC

This scoreboard replaced the one in the opposite pocket. The old board was just that, a board with a small platform in front. An ''old'' bloke wearing a white coat sat on the platform and when required stood up and ''manually'' changed the score. Then sat down again. As a kid I thought he had a pretty cool job.

robbie you spelled Spitalnic right.

Don't forget the stall catching fire beneath it and spectators jumping onto the ground.

1982 against the 'woods

I was there!
