37 on the primary list now. Picks 43 and 70 (if we use it) to come and jack martin.

So with Ramsey and now Martin we have 39 seniors - added two rookies in Honey and Phillips.

So leaving a spot open for the SSP (possibly Webb?).

Any rookie spots left?

Not sure where to post this but very curious as to why we were gunning so hard for Hayden Young in the draft?
Surely, the one spot we have more than ample coverage is half-back??

Who is our crumbing forward if Eddie is injured?

Very true, none are true crumbing forwards. Cuningham kicked one brilliant crumbing goal last year but who can recall another? Murphy has the potential but he's 30+ years of age. I love what the list management team have done in terms of acquiring picks but the small crumbing forward has been a glaring deficiency on our list and once again it has been overlooked.
I'd much rather we'd foregone one of the midfielders and chosen a specialist small forward to develop.

I was looking at the list and identified the bigger, mature bodies;

Docherty Jones Plowman
Newman Weitering Simpson
Newnes Cripps Murphy
Martin CCurnow Lang
Betts Casboult McGovern
Kruezer ECurnow Gibbons
Take your pick on any youngster for the bench.....

Ladies and Gentleman, apart from a few, we are at a spot we can afford our young draftees to build their development in the VFL!!!!

Look at his high light reel Martin seems to equip himself very well when close to goal

Agreed. The days of gifting games should now be virtually over. Most of our youngsters will earn their spots on form. The rest will develop in the 2s until their time comes. Nothing wrong with developing players in the 2s - all the strong clubs do it. We just haven’t been in a position to do it until now due to a lack of list depth

Martin. Agree. Incredible radar for the goals.
He's done it over and over and over.

Cuningham has been out injured too much to build a body of work as a small forward. Bu we all know he can.
The fact he did kick a brilliant goal, says he could kick another one or fifty.
For the record, he has kicked a few 'great' small forward goals, not just one, we just need him on the park.

Picking a speccy from the draft we hope we can develop as a small forward is hit and miss too.
We've tried with speccies in LeBois, Polson, Galluci ...gosh...we have committed to smalls who have kicked goals as a small forward since way back to 2015 with Tutt and Clem Smith, and even Sumner and Garlett. We all thought Pickett might d it. No lack of trying to find a small forward.

Maybe Ramsay and Philips have been earmarked to be developed for the small forward role...they have the pace.

Fact is, that this year we have cover for the small forward role with the recruitment of Betts and Martin.
It is obvious SOS had a focus on the small forward role to the point our strategy was to pay overs and offer a first round pick for a specialist, best of breed, bonafide proven small forward in Papley. No one minded that. Showed intent to plug a hole, not hop to plug a hole. Can go again next year too. We hae plenty of ammunition.

Can't dismiss Murphy either as a small forward He is a bird in the hand. He might give us what we need IF Betts doesn't go around a 2nd year, and he gives us time to find a bonafide proven small foward specialist in 2021 if are not again successful finding one in 2020 Trade period. I think they are focussed on that role.

The small forward role is not a problem for Carlton in 2020.

Was thinking that myself. The beauty of trading pick 9 was it allowed us to grab the best of both worlds, A big unit utility/mid and a crumbing forward. The fact that Williams was still available at pick 20 suggests either he didn't pass the character test or we still think we can turn a current mid into a small forward. Don't understand why given we haven been able to unearth one to date. Maybe trading for one is the preferred model. We need smalls who can consistently kick 30 goals plus in a season. Still a work in progress.

I still think ruck is our bigger problem.

Why do you think that. I would have thought more goals are conceded through turnovers/general play, than stoppages.

No doubt crumbing forwards are important however they are not essential.
Collingwood went within a whisker of winning the flag in 2018 without a true "crumbing" forward. Stevenson and Varcoe play further up the ground whilst Elliot wasn't part of the side due to injury.
Ditto Western Bulldogs in 2016.
Hopefully the likes of Martin, Fisher and Cunningham can be viable goal kicking options for us over the next few years. Maybe we can land Papley next year?

There's enough talent in the forward line to kick big scores. We just need a good forwards coach to help with structure and method.

Who are our pressure forwards to retain the ball inside 50 and to prevent the opposition running the ball out?

Fully expect to see Betts, Martin & Cuningham as our genuine small forwards.

Cunningham hasn't been the answer so far (when he has been on the park), Martin might spend some time in the midfield, and I'm very happy that Eddie is back, however he'll need help, as he's 38!
