Do you think it was deliberate?

With shortened quarters, I would've thought an emphasis on power would have been more appropriate than endurance.

Yep Russell has said he prepared the players for a condensed season with 5/6 day breaks.
It’s a tactical gamble for sure to sacrifice bulk for endurance.
I suppose it all depends if we can get the ball moving out of congestion.

Time will tell.

With less weight to carry perhaps there will be less wear & tear in such a compressed season.

After Port game, in the last 10 games, we play all 5 of the teams least favoured for the flag plus Hawks who are no good.

If history is any guide, those 5 games will be the hardest games for us to win.

Heard from a Hawks source today that BB is very unpopular amongst his fellow assistants and footy staff at Hawthorn.
Was interesting, along the lines of when he left us.....over coaches, way too intense and stamps out any sign of spirit amongst the troops....but Clarko loves him.

When was the last time we had a coach with a positive win loss ratio after a year?
I'm guessing it was Ratt's last year before they sacked him for the MM...m...m..messiah

FWIW
My thoughts on what Teague should look to doing in the remaining 7 games in 2020

Gibbons on ball. Reckon he reads it as well as anyone in congestion and good hands. Is wasted in attack

Kennedy deep forward. Too slow for a mid . Doesn’t win enough ball in close for a guy of his pace or lack of it. Does have sticky fingers and is a really good contested mark for his size. Play as a permanent forward
Setterfield Like Kennedy not good enough as a mid. Play as a back flanker. Does read it well. Like Kennedy too slow and doesn’t get enough first hands to the ball in close

McKay put the pencil through him this year.
He needs to get much fitter . Has all the physical tools but not fit enough.

Play DeKoning as first ruck with Casboult as backup. Casboult plays better in that roll and DeKoning can have his development fast tracked. Pittonet as back up

Cunningham in the middle. He teased us against Essendon*. Simply has had enough development.

Drop Simmo and Samo. Both have been overall disappointing in defence.
Possibly trade Samo. Might get a couple of decent picks from the dockers

We need more leg speed in transition
Play Honey, O’Brien, Dow,Philip at the expense of the ones that should be dropped

Play as many on the list. This is the year to experiment

I agree with a chunk of that, but not TDK as first ruck, Setterfield out of the middle, and a line through McKay. Madness all 3.

So we're 4-6 and our next 2 games are against the team directly below us and the team directly above us. I think it's a bit early to put the cue in the rack.
Setterfield will be fine in the midfield. When Cripps needs a spell, he's the perfect replacement. We just need to put some speed in there with them. Instead of Cripps, Setterfield, Curnow together or Cripps Kennedy Curnow, Walsh or Dow or Fisher should be rotated through as the 3rd mid.
We're too one paced.

Which would be fine if it were a fast pace...

Completely agree BV. We’ve seemingly settled on only playing Cripps, Ed, Setters and Kennedy through the middle. They are all slow inside ball winners. They are all valuable but we need one fast midfielder in there at all times for some variety. The lack of pace is a double edged sword at the moment.

Defensively, we can’t stop the opposition spread. Those 4 guys are all too slow to go with quick opposition midfielders. While we played the four guys mentioned through the middle, the Eagles played Kelly, Shuey, Yeo, Sheed and Redden through there. Beyond being a very high quality midfield group, they have variety. Kelly, Shuey and Yeo all win their own ball but also have speed to exit stoppages and congestion. Sheed and Redden support them with the bullocking in and under work. We had no one that could go near Kelly when he started running through the stoppages at pace.

Offensively, the lack of pace results in less impactful clearances and lower metres gained. Unlike the Eagles, our guys can’t burst away from congestion, run 10-15 metres and bang it forward another 50. We’re also under more pressure when disposing of the ball due to not being able to create any separation from the opposition. This is where I’d like to see Dow, Fisher or Cunners being told to run through stoppages. If they get the ball, they can get out the front of the stoppage and drive us forward quickly and directly. Put the opposition defence under pressure like they are doing to us.

From my observations Setterfield is often second to the ball clearances
If he is to play midfield he needs to be first more often

Gibbons to me looks like a pure inside mid the way he plays
I would certainly try to players in different positions

Unlikely to play finals and it’s a bit of a token season

Watch Setterfield's closing speed and you'll notice he isn't slow.
He is played as an outside mid.
He has starred as an inside mid.
You have to give Setters credit for his good games and take note why he was good. Its on the inside where you find Cripps and Ed.

TDK rucked in the 2nd when Pitto went down.
After half time, Pitto rucked.
TDK was gassed in the last quarter
It seems he can only ruck for 2 quarters with breaks at senior level.

Play Samo in his rightful position in the midfield.
Has done well there in the past.
You can't write him off because Teague believes him to be a McLeod role

We need to add some speed.
All those you mention will change the dynamics of the team next year when they replace the old slow men.
