Today was a different kind of day for me. Earlier in the week I decided that I'd be going to the game with my two older kids, aged 11 and 8, number 3 is still a little young. I just had one of those feelings that it would be a good one.

My father in law joined us and halfway through the second quarter my kids had pretty much given up. They wanted to do anything but continue to feel the humiliation any longer. I persisted saying that we'd come back, that you have to believe, hang in there.

Now I sit here on a Saturday night, I refused to watch Adelaide, frankly I don't care about draft picks or the narrative provided by people trying to find something to bring us down. What I can't shake is that Carlton, or sport, can provide things to us that we might not be able to get in life normally.

I really feel that today provided invaluable life lessons to my kids and to me even. Sometimes good things will happen, but sharing them with loved ones is just as important. My kids commented about how great it was to sit with so many Carlton supporters, they felt part of something great. I could see it on their faces, it was like '@#$%&! you all, we are a great club'.

My daughter (11) kept high fiving a woman behind her, without fail after every goal, turns out it was Lochie O'brien's grandmother. She told my daughter this as she had tears in her eyes when he was injured, it was almost like we were family.

I don't know where I'm going with this, we could go out next week and get spanked, but it won't take away the memories created by today. I think I might go more often now.....................what have I got to lose?

Once we were 37 pts down I really thought a thumping was coming our way to then win it comprehensively in the next half is just dumbfounding but so very exhilarating.
Very positive and uplifting we’ll knock off the Dogs next, Murphy maybe Jones make us stronger can’t see us lose our next game.

Thanks kk. I'm shitscared to bring my two (8 and 5) down. Theyve been members since birth but I don't want to subject them to it. They just know that we go for Carlton and the raiders and that * are filthy cheats. I was hoping it would be this year but next year seems more realistic.

It was a special win after a dramatic week. I felt optimistic yesterday morning but at 37 points down I felt as everyone else did.
Seeing the boys on the field enjoying their footy was particularly fantastic.
We are are great club and Carlton supporters will always have a strong connection with each other.

I live in Sydney with wife and 2 boys 11 and 15.
We live in a one team town...sorta.

My boys pay respect to the past and don't dismiss our 23 flags.
They know the success I enjoyed since 1968 and aware of the shortfall they've endured.
They have learned resilience and fully aware of the rebuild.
Carlton has taught them about loyalty, achievement, persistence and comradery.

With the sacking of the coach we were all cool about it.
Being one of the few Carlton families in the area we received a lot of focus.
It felt everyone like felt for us and our team's plight.

We still had belief in this list: Cripps and the kids.
We were privy to the feeling on the inside, and felt the club made the right decision.
We love Bolton. He is admired by our foes for his commitment and belief in this rebuild.

We bought last minute plane tickets and came to the game.
The first half was tense but we believed at half time we could win this.
We met up with old and new Carltonians.
The 3rd quarter was brewing an aura amongst the faithful and you could hear the buzz.
The support was huge as the belief grew. It was special.
Imagine what it will be like when we are back on top we said.
We remember the final against the tigers. The blue army is awesome.

The final siren was so sweet.
Tears of joy.
How good was the Carlton crowd!. What a buzz.
The song sung with gusto.
High fiving everyone around us.


We love Melbourne and all Carlton families wearing the Dark Navy Blue.
Just feels like home.

My son started reciting the message Fitzpatrick read on our 150th anniversary as we walked along Flinders st... people smiling everywhere.
Make no mistake, this club is huge and a huge part in Australian history.

It's a state of mind,
A sense of belonging to something special...son knows it off by heart.
We high fives each other for the rest of the night.
The texts and phone calls were abundant.
Everyone was wild about Carlton winning. Synonymous.

We love Melbourne.
As my boys say, the centre of the universe is in Melbourne: it's called Princes Park.

Great posts people, thankyou. I was crook yesterday so listened to bits of the game on the radio. Just watched the highlights. Hopefully a confidence builder for the future.

I understand your passion for the game KK
I can also understand posters getting pissed off with posters
like myself who are negative.
There used to be a few more on this site.
It would have been a great day for you and your kids.
There is not much better than seeing your team win like that with passionate Carlton
supporters in close attendance and we have been down for so long.

I have supported Carlton for 50 years and it may surprise a few here but I still want them to win.

My beef with the club is it hasn’t changed with the changes at AFL level and we have paid the price for that and as you get older you do see the world differently and in perspective more clearly.
You hope you do. The body gets older but you get a bit smarter .

No doubt it was a great win and I was happy, but not delirious about it.
Cripps played one the best game I have seen by an individual for a while
He basically dragged us over the line
Walsh is an amazing talent for a 19 year old
Gibbons was the most individual pleasing aspect of the game.He is a really good footballer and says a lot about the importance of recruiting.

However there are still many players who disappointed me yesterday and some are not up to AFL standard. We still recruit too many of them even if they where the navy blue logo.
Some have talent but don’t go in hard enough
Let’s not forget that Simpson our most consistent player over the last 10 years
will probably not be there next year
We really need DeKoning to become that mobile ruckman we desperately need over
the next decade.
Murphy has one year to go on his contract but he has been largely ineffective lately

We must recruit and list manage better.
I believe our last 2 drafts and trades have been poor and despite yesterday’s win I’m not
sold on Mc Govern or Setterfield who we gave up so much for.

The club has stated that it wants to win a flag in 5 years
Great to talk like that and it can happen but we would need to cut half the list again and
recruit better
IMO your bottom 6 players win you the flag on the day
You need a list of 35 players who are of AFL standard to cover for injuries

I want a 17 th flag just like you and everyone else who supports Carlton.
You can’t have that if you have a couple of blokes like Cripps and Walsh getting you

Anyway a good win yesterday and I hope the guys put in a good effort
when I see them in the flesh over in the West in a couple of weeks

First time with the whole family, wife and 5 kids, I brought my younger two to the game or the first time the older kids I'm afraid have had to cop it many times before and when we were 37 points down, that familiar feeling was something we all felt, this one was going to get ugly.

My kids love Jack, so it was fitting that his repeated efforts led to our first goal and sparked the team into life, you could just start to see the pressure being released and the boys lifted themselves off the canvas like rocky and started dishing it out to the lions.

I just hope and pray the boys can bring that belief in each other for the rest of the season, still too early for me to trust that they will

I was shattered half way through the 2nd. Really thinking 'where to from here'. Maybe a reflection on the players but under Bolton that would have blown out to 100.

My 15yo came along. He has stuck fat through some pretty crappy years. First live win he'd seen in over 2 years. Was delighted for him.

Sadly my 2 younger boys have seen nothing but rubbish. They stayed away. I suspect only sustained success will get them back. The lost generation of fans that are spoken of.

It's funny that isn't it.
One of the things I love best about winning is when the team are so happy. It's just really uplifting. We have seen their pain so often and they are mostly so young. They felt bad for letting us down. It is just a giant relief for all of us.
