A radical 24-page proposal to “reclaim the history’’ of the AFL is being presented to club presidents today and looks set to be accepted by the AFL Commission.

The landmark proposal calls for premierships won between 1870 and 1896 to be officially recognised and player records during the “foundation years’’ to be included in the official history of the game.

Since 1897, Essendon* and Carlton have won the most VFL/AFL premierships with 16 and Collingwood is second with 15.

Including the foundation premierships, from 1870, would alter the flags leaderboard, putting Carlton on top with 22, followed by Essendon* on 20, Geelong 16, Collingwood 16 and Melbourne 15.

If that gets up you might be careful what you wish for - because if they include Port Adelaide flags they swamp us all

Got nothing else to celebrate - so yep I’ll take it.

I’m guessing Eddie won’t be in favour.

You can guarantee if this recalibration put Essendon* on top that it would happen.

It won't, so don't hold your breath.

Why the @#$%&! is Essendon***** on top in the current leaderboard, anyway?

Can't even claim it's alphabetical.... C comes before E last time I checked.

The whole thing means nothing unless they add Carlton's dual wizard cup flags won by those great Pagan sides in the 2000s

Thanks Rexy

3 years ago the AFL wanted to do this because it makes the VFA-VFL-AFL the longest running team comp in the world.

I thought it was Carlton 23 and Bumbers 21.

My 15yo, who was 12yo when he discovered this has been spruiking those numbers ever since to anyone who wants to brag in Sydney.

We are on top of the Premiership ladder and this way we get a clear winner

and the winner is ....C...ARLTON !!!!!!!!

Just informed by my 15yo son....Carlton's 1869 flag obviously misses out.

is it because the competition wants to see a strong Essendon*?

or are we that hated?

The VFA was the most senior football competition in the years between 1870 and 1896, clubs involved in that competition could not win anything higher than the premiership in that competition- it is logical and correct that the premierships count in these clubs records and histories.

It is logical and correct that the VFA be treated as the highest football competition between 1870 and 1896 and premierships won in those years be counted.
