Really no place for those sorts of comments about Roughead.

Speaking of Roughead, his fly for a mark in the pocket was completely unrealistic, yet the umpire called play on and O'Brien got a holding the ball call against him, goal Hawthorn. Did he launch on the back of another Hawk?

Agree Roughead's attempt was totally unrealistic. Couldn't believe we were not awarded a free

If we had won yesterday there is zero chance we would’ve “turned up” to play norf next week

If that is true em then I would still rather have beaten Hawks.

We should be beyond the point where we need a bad loss the week before to switch us on for the next.

Couldn’t watch due to sons footy.

Kept checking scores as much as I could. Very pleasantly surprised with the first half.

Once I saw the Hawks coming back, I just KNEW we wouldn’t win. I know that is without context but I had zero confidence we’d steady and win.

I long for the ‘knowing we are going to win’ feelings again.

I was watching with sound down, and assumed that LOB took advantage and played on. Can't believe it wasn't a free.

Ever since Bolton has arrived it has not been about winning.

The club actually thought that they could bottom out get the best kids in the draft and rise back to the top again.
It was a calculated strategy by the club. Now they developed an environment where winning doesn't matter.

Look at Melbourne

That isn't it. Also tanking for years? Complete crap, end of 2007 is the only time we could be accused of tanking. It can't have been that terrible, we were back playing finals 2 years later.

The only thing that will stop us from here is if the kids don't develop on their current trajectory, nothing to do with a winning/losing culture.

Richmond apparently had a losing culture as recently as 2 years ago, now they aren't seen that way.

What was the choice? Keep the same list from 2015 and just berate everyone each time we lost (which would of been just as frequent?)

People over intellectualize this stuff about culture. We currently don't have the experienced leaders a side like Hawthorn has, that was the difference yesterday. A situation made far worse with Simpson going down and Doch not around.

Reckon the playing group are learning some great lessons, and starting to know who they can trust in the heat.
Finally the years of match sim is over ,and we are actually going for the chocolates.
I loved the effort, albeit undermanned and unsuccessful, to come back at 'em in the last quarter.
We are a lot closer than I imagined after that mess up at GC.
Still far too many shotgun holes in our own feet, before we start on the umpires for mine.

With about 10 minutes to go I honestly thought we would roll over and end up loosing by 6-7 goals. I’m pretty happy we fought it out, but sadly I am easily pleased these days...

has to be said I think...
a nice surprise was Windscreens standing up in the heat.
Bodes well for his future.

It reminded me of the Sydney game, actually, in that we played open, expansive footy early and looked good doing it. We scored heavily and the only reason the Hawks didn't is because they missed some easy shots at goal (which the Swans didn't - they didn't miss). Then, as the game progressed, it tightened up and the more physically mature team was able to work their way into the ascendancy by locking it in their half of the ground for long periods.
Unlike the Swans game, we fought it out better yesterday.

But in a game of small margins, there were a few moments that stood out:

Murphy missing everything when he snapped at goal late.
O'Brien not taking the time to have a proper shot at goal from deep in the pocket.
Walsh missing on the run after he intercepted the pass in defence.
SPS hand-balling back to Newman only for Wingard to intercept.
Two bad attempts to switch: In the 2nd (?) Jones took a mark on the half-back line and quickly switched to Weitering back in the goal-square, but there was no-one to switch to. Weitering got called to play on and went long down the line to a Hawks intercept. The other one where Jones got called to play on (because there was nothing happening up-field) and was harassed off his kick. Jones played well otherwise.
We bombed it long out of defence a lot late, but we barely took a contested mark all day.
We bombed it into attack late, but we barely took a contested mark all day.
We dominated when we ran the ball, but we ran out of run as the game went on.

Given where our team is at and the evenness of the contest and the competition, you need everything to go right to win the close-ones. Losing three players doesn't help. The umpiring 50/50s going against you doesn't help.

I'm frustrated by the loss, but realistic. We played very well early - as well as I can recall us playing. We're not the real deal yet, but it's exciting to see the team play and see what they could be.

I've pretty well stuck up for Murph over his career but that kick was absolute garbage (might have been 3rd quarter). He could have steadied things as the hawks were coming.

Could say a lot of things here but 2 quick comments ...

Must learn to never ever lose when 6 goals up (sh@t ourselves)
Once we learn the above we must learn how to come back if/when we find ourselves 6 goals down

and remember he missed a sitter in the gold coast game when he dribbled a shocker at a bunch of players in the goal squre - could have won it for us then also.

He infuriated me all game. The second snap was nice but can't give any credit for the first goal.

It’s all well and good blaming the umpires.

I remember the days back in the 80’s where Umpire Ian Robinson used to absolutely torch us ....... but we still used to win anyway.

Except for that Neale Daniher game at Princes Park in 1981 when he paid a free kick against Fitzpatrick for time wasting.
