Pros:
Walsh will be a star of the game.
Cripps
Setterfield
SPS
Cunningham
Newman
Phillips
Gibbons
Dow cameos
Tackling was better

Cons:
We are still susceptible to the run off HB. It's been our Achilles heel for years. They scored about five goals thanks to Saad (I wanted him for his run)
Lobbe has had it. When he went into the ruck in the last, Essendon* scored five goals on the back of clearances. Phillips was on in the forward line for some reason (resting Mitch?). Kreuzer won't cut it with the 6-6-6 setup fr te same reason. We have to get hand to ball in the centre. I wouldn't be surprised if TDK gets a run if he can produce some reasonable form in the twos.
Garlett is being played out of position. He needs to be on the wing or HFF. We need Williamson and Marchbank back on the park and fit.
Our forward line is still lacking in structure. Mind you, we were without Charlie for almost 3/4 and McGovern for about half a game.

I posted last year that with the rule changes we would be better set up than many teams because of the type of players we have. The game is going to be more open so players like Garlett, Fisher, Cunningham and SPS will have more space. Teams who have been consistently recruiting players for a stoppage based game will not be as well situated as we are.

I know it was JLT but both teams were pretty strong and I imagine EFC* would have thoght they would get over us easily.

I was pretty happy over all. We won't be the easybeats we have been and the win will give the players and coaches added confidence for the real thing. Bring it on.

Lots of pleasing things about the result (the final quarter fadeout was annoying though), but what I liked was we kicked 100 points despite our 3-pronged tall attack being either quiet or off the field for the most part.

I really hope Cuningham can keep this form up into the H&A season. I've long hoped he could be that classy small forward we've been screaming for since Betts left, and I believe he has the tools.

Didn't realise Essendon* would miss Hooker, Bellchambers and Dank so badly...

A fair bit of nous and class from gibbons for that 2nd goal. Always looked to be a goal with a shimmy. Others would have panicked with the ball ending up out on the full.

Watching highlights you'd think they pumped us.

As each highlight comes up our score increments by 2 goals

Like I said in the Walsh thread - the boy can play. Future Captain. Future Brownlow(s). Hopefully a few Norm Smiths too
Setterfield was good and will only get better. Good pickup.
SPS stronger, stood up in a few tackles and was productive.
Cunningham skillful and creative but I think lacks pace over the first 5 yards
Gibbons busy... needs time.

Forward line still needs to gel and midfielders will improve the connection.

Backline needs more runners. We'll really miss Doc.

We need Kreuzer fit in the middle.

Teams will need two bona fide rucks in their team - with the new rule, if one goes down, you can get scored against very very quickly.

A win is a win.

Our pressure for first 3 quarters was relentless
Moving the ball 45 degrees forward or across at worse instead of going back works
The connection by hand and foot was very good
Scored over 100 points with new game plan.

Not sure if we ran out of gas or Philips going out of the ruck had a huge impact.
Umpires had a little to do with Druggies momentum i the last.
We were able to control the last 5 minutes and take back the ascendancy.

Walsh > Shiel. Can bank we won that deal.
Walsh not only amazing for a 1st year player, he was just amazing massing numbers and linking. Strong.

Philips is a good tap ruck man. Hope he stays fit. His mobility and marking around the ground were a bonus.

Cripps Fisher look like AA players. Do what they like
SPS has arrived. Time stands still when he has the ball.
Dow has goo speed, and looks to have recovered from minor surgery. His touch will improve.

Setterfield is the real deal and will only get better. He's the one I was hoping would stand up and he did.
Setters and Crippa in the middle with Fisher, Dow by their side are the future.
Setters will release Crippa forward and that means goals.

Weiters has stepped up.
3 talls in the backline stood up.
Newman is a great aquisition.
Really like Garletts run out of the back half.
Simmo, Newman and Garlett running ball get us going from defence.

3 Talls forward didn't do the damage we expected because they didn't play a full game together.
Talls were dangerous and Harry should have received more frees.
Small forwards Gibbons, Cuningham, Murphy are dangerous: 6 goals from crumbers.

Jack Silvagni belongs. Would have been great for him to start off with a goal because its usually a weapon.
He's strong, applies great pressure, footy IQ, tackles and is versatile.

Loved seeing what Cuningham and Jack do in the midfield.

We have plenty of mids to rotate through the guts and creat head aches for opposition when they go forward.

I guess we will see Kreuzer, Fasolo and OBrien added next game to put more pressure on positions.

Glad Stocker and TDK looked good in the VFL too. SOS has recruited really well.

Go Bluebaggers. I love youse all...

...and Bluegirl and AGRO, loved reading your commentary.

No need for the sad emoticon after Norm smiths coz it WILL happen. Walsh is the real deal and Crippa will lead him to the promised land.

Cuningham's weapon is his speed over the first 5 metres. He looked good, and just has to believe and get to more contests.

We have to learn to run out the ball from defence without Docherty this year.
I liked the 3 talls and 3 running players in defence: Simmo, Garlett, Newman.
Its the Garlett like speed which is the real need from defemce ala Saad speed.

Next year I can see Docherty, Newman and Stocker running the ball out of defence if Garlett doesn't consolidate the HB position IMO.

I too am a firm believer we need 2 rucks in the team to ensure we always have a fit, strong and competite ruckman at the contest.
Can't afford to be dominated in the ruck with new rule.
Don't want to lose Harry from forwardline to play ruck if the Number 1 ruck goes down.

Hooker is critical to the Druggies*
Bellchambers makes them better.

Yes! Great review as always BB. :thanks:
Reminds me of Gibbs too as has been mentioned but more his body and face than his playing...which dunno..maybe a bit Selwood/Mitchell?
I think we witnessed the 1st full game of a future legend.
BBW...we did try to tell you!
I thought agro was far too grouchy...we had to tie him to the bar a couple of times on account of the umps and..
Well EFC* in general.
I'm glad someone appreciated my reference to McGrath as that solo man from the 80's ads meets Tom Selleck/Barrassi.
What is up with this influx of moustaches eh? Even simmo. I blame Newcombe for starting it.

Interested if the Shiel family still renewed their Carlton Membership’s this year.

Very pleased with a lot of things, eg beating Essendon*, Stringer looking like a goose, Walsh, Dow, Pstrevski-Seton, Fisher, Setterfield, Newman, Gibbons, Weitering.

After last year though, a bit hard to read anything into the result. We beat St Kilda and also beat Hawthorn with a scoreline of 102 to 97 in the JLT.

30 minutes JLT vs a full run in the reserves I'd reckon. Lower standard but more miles into the legs.

Have they been playing stocker off half back in the VFL?

Wasn't sure where he fitted in but this might make sense.

We have a plethora of young, gun mids now in Crippa, Walsh, Dow, Setterfield, Kennedy, SPS, Fisher... LoB on the fringes... when they go click click the others'll go BOOM.
