Pleasing to read the encouraging reports about Gibbons, Setterfield and especially Cuningham. Sounds like he's really stepped up.

Walsh has been the stand out.
Cuningham shown he belongs with intensity on the ball and kicking a couple,
SPS played really well in the middle in the first half.
Newman looked good at HB in 1st half.
Ed kicked a goal as a forward. set shot on twitter

Have a look at franks posts above.
He's summarised each quarter.

Jack, Gibbo and kennedy didnt get near it in 1st half.

Lost 8.5 to 12.5. Not bad after giving them a 5 goal start
Won the 2nd and 4th quarter.
Good last quarter.
50 metre goal by Jack
Cunners BOG and 2 goals
McKay 2 goals
McKay a great target up forward
Charlie is the magnet. Our players, the crowd and the opposition coach had eyes and focus on him through out

Walsh

Did I say Walsh. He' going to be the best No 1 pick ever.

Turnovers killed us.

That great mark of jones on the website was great, byt WTF was that hopeless short pass to Plowman that ended up out of bounds.
Serously not worth keeping players who do that in the first 22.

Garlett was the turnover king.

Anyway. Just a praccy game dusting off cobwebs and trying out things, most of which wont be repeated during the season.

Next time, one of our 4 rucks will play. Don't know how Levi went in thr ruck, but it sounds like he was beaten.

Myrt as in Myrtleford near Bright?
If so ... stunning country we visit every year for a few days.

Don't shit me.

No one else mentioned this during game.

Teague said he got a knock to the knee.

Just back from the game. Generally underwhelming. Cunners and Jones good. Walsh is a ripper- a natural footballer.

It was almost like we were unaware of the new kickout rule.

Didn't seem like there was any plan or set play to try and utilise it at any stage, which I found odd, given now is the time to try it.

And with the 6-6-6 rule and no ruckman, if Tom Lynch can kick 7 on us as Gold Coast player then Fred Fanning is spinning in his grave right now.

Garlett seemed to find plenty of it as a defender, which come might've been a set play from Hawthorn in the end because he managed to turn it over nearly every time with some really poor decision making.
Full credit to him though for continuing to back himself to go for the difficult option, obviously not low on confidence. Did hit up a nice left foot pass up the boundary line towards the end of the game, reward for his persistence.

Not nearly enough going on at ground level to counteract playing 3 tall forwards. As good as Curnow and McKay were at presenting, we are going to continue to get murdered on the transition if there's no one at ground level to stop the ball being waltzed out of there.

So very unsure where this will leave us with the big 3 starting forward. Unless Charlie spends more time up the ground this year, as he attended a fair few centre bounces today.

Jack looks stronger. Did a few nice things in the midfield, and tank has obviously improved.

Cuningham provided a bit of acceleration from the contest which was nice to see.

O'Brien could have perhaps used this practice game to practice kicking on his right foot.
SPS on the other hand kicks beautifully on both sides, a sequence of play in the first quarter where he hit someone up twice on his left through traffic in the space of a minute.

On 9news Murphy appeared to twist his knee while tackling. Not a ''knock on the knee'' as stated.
Didn't look good.

+1 for coffe chakra. I also visit Bright annually around early March for a week of riding. Touch and go this year though.

Jones our best would have lost by a lot more if he hadn't been playing brave and strong

Encouraging Walsh Newman Cunningham SPS

gibbons got better as match wore on Setterfield better in second half of second half

Not much from Dow Kennedy ed Curnow etc
Plow McGovern only a half

Thrashed in ruck

Forward line looked good at times but lacks crumbers
Garlett diabolical disposal

Not great performance but not bad encouraging

Once again 1st and 3rd quarters costly

I went along to the game, great to be back at Optus Oval as I still call it.
We went in without a ruckman and we got smashed out of the middle.
Every time Hawthorn went forward they seemed to goal.
Our forward line was too top heavy and there were no small crumbing forwards to clean up the dropped marks.
Walsh looked terrific, O"Brien played well as did SPS.
Garlett kicked the ball straight to Hawthorn players at least 5 times, hitting them on the chest.
Some players only played half the game, others only a quarter.
I didnt see Murphy get injured so hopefully he is okay.
Jones played well but still turns the ball over too often.
I didnt notice Dow much, I don't think he played every quarter.
Umpiring was pretty ordinary, so nothing new there.
Anyway, it was only a practice match but there is still lots of work to be done.

Lots to work on but a few positives.

Negatives first, Garlett off half back. Embarrassing. Hawthorn kicked 2.2 as a direct result of his errors. Centred the ball twice in defensive 50, which were marked by Hawthorn players. He received a cheer from the crowd in the 4th quarter when a kick finally hit a Carlton player.
O'Meara smashed us in the first half, we're fortunate he only played a half.
Polson? I don't get it. He had a run in the middle. First stoppage Murphy handball to him, he turned around in space and kicked it straight into the back of a player. Turnover, goal. Next centre bounce, he manned up on O'Meara. O'Meara walked off to win the stoppage, kicked it forward. Goal.

Levi and Harry in the ruck. Disappointing. Harry tends to give away free kicks rather than compete.

We were beaten badly at the ground balls. When we had the opportunity to run with the ball, we looked good but it was few and far between. Too often the ball hit the deck off contests and it was Hawthorn winning the possession.

We need to better understand the difference between creating play and creating possessions. When a player is facing our goal and in the clear, he should take responsibility for creating play. Take space and kick to a forward option.Too often that player handballed to someone with their backs to goal and we lost possession. That's creating possessions for the sake of it and doesn't favour the team.

Kick ins? As others have said, nothing different from us. I'm sick of seeing Daisy and Simmo taking the ball for kick ins. Give the @#$%&! kids a go!

Differences?

From memory the forward line started with Harry, Charlie, Governor, Cunners, Ed and Gibbons. Cunners looked lively and his skills are as good as most.
First crumb, Gibbons ran onto it beautifully. He was immediately tackled but he has the ability once he adapts to the pace.
Midfield started with Dow Kennedy, Casboult and Samo from memory. Walsh and Murphy on the wings. Charlie, Polson, Cuningham, Setterfield and Ed also had a run.
O'Brien is still too small. He goes hard but needs 12 months in the VFL IMO. He's too easily pushed off the ball.
Dow on the other hand was tough and aggressive. I liked his effort.
The forward line mixed it up a lot with Charlie, Harry, Kennedy, Cunningham, Jack and others playing as the deepest forward.

Positives? Setterfield got through and he moves well. Samo looked good. Clean and used the ball well. Too often he took the short option again but he was a strong presence although he could have spent more time in the middle IMO.
Hopefully Murphy is OK as it was great to see him out there without tape on his body.
Newman looks the goods and Walsh was exceptional.
There's plenty work on but the talent is there. The pressure is now on Bolts and co to perform as well.

Beautiful afternoon at the old ground. Well done to the club for free entry, cheap car parking, plenty of food and drink. Fan friendly.

Walsh the real deal.

SPS busy. Still too many dinky nothing kicks.

Jones typical good and bad.

Harry and Charlie look dangerous.

Good to see Gov and Setters having a run.

Cuningham typically few good things then disappear.

Weiters looks fit and more mobile.

Jack busy and played with purpose

Newman handy.

LOB busy.

Overall, Hawks more tidy than us and more switched on.

Nice to read praise of Jonesy's game.
Just viewed club made highlights and jones stood out as a flying magnet.
Saw that pass to Plowman he did earlier on in the day, and imo its inexcusable at this level of professionalism.
Garlett the same.

Turnovers kill us every game.

Thanks for your report. Lucky bastard.
