Young duo earns Ed’s praise
Five elected to lead

Carlton Football Club can confirm co-captain Sam Docherty has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during a training session on Monday morning.

Docherty immediately underwent scans following the innocuous incident, with results confirming the defender has re-injured the same knee that sidelined him a year ago.

The 25-year-old had returned to pre-season training in terrific condition following an outstanding commitment to his recovery since the initial injury last November. He had been completing the full pre-season training program alongside his teammates.

Head of Football Brad Lloyd said the entire club would now throw its unwavering support behind Docherty, whose professionalism and drive will once again be at the forefront of his rehabilitation.

“It’s clearly a huge disappointment for Sam to experience such cruel luck, we are all feeling for him right now.

“The way he tackled his rehab this year was simply incredible and he could have played at the end of last season before the decision was made to hold him back.

“If the last 12 months have shown anything, it’s that Sam is made of everything that is required to return to his elite best once again.

“Our entire football club; players, coaches, staff, members and supporters will now support Sam to ensure he will complete his rehabilitation once again with the entire Carlton family by his side.”

All options are currently being considered before a timeline for Docherty’s recovery can be determined.

If Andrew Russell was under any illusions about this being the greatest task he'll ever face, it must be dawning on him now.
