Setterfield had nothing to do with the Shiel deal. It was completed before we were told no.

The question then is, Walsh or most likely finals this year?

No its not.

Focus on what's in the hand not what might and might not be.
* were finals bound and nearly missed them with Shiel on their books.

Its Walsh and Setterfield who SOS netted us, and he missed out on Shiel.
Now which net would you prefer? That's the first question!

Whether we were finals bound with Shiel and Bolton is another discussion.

As I stated above. Setterfield was already in the bag and has nothing to do with the Shiel deal.

But to answer your question I would prefer Walsh any day for our future development.

I would love to get Coniglio.
However, I also don’t want to sell the farm to get him.

Big fish recruits are overrated. I’m not sure I can remember a recent example where a big fish has delivered a flag.
Buddy to the Swans?
Dangerfield to Geelong?
And these were already top teams...
Stringer AND Shiel to the Bombers?
Treloar and Adams to the Pies?
Judd for us?
The closest would be Tom Boyd to the Dogs.
Maybe this year the Tigers will win with Lynch. Maybe.

On the other hand, I can think of a few teams who lost a big fish and then won a flag...
Buddy left the Hawks
Ablett left Geelong
Deledio left the Tigers

The point is that a big fish isn’t necessarily the answer.
And I certainly wouldn’t be judging SOS on this somewhat fickle aspect of the job!

I will enjoy Shiel running around with his mates getting dismantled in week one of the finals.

No, they can't.
We can only afford our offer because we have banked salary cap space (we're going way over the cap to be able to pay him our offer). Crows were able to get a trade for Dangerfield because Geelong were only paying him $800k, ie well below his market value.

Understand that, and its a great ploy to offer so much in the first year, knowing it will be difficult for GWS to match.

Bottom line is it can be done, if GWS decide to stump up the said offer of $2M in the first year.
They might be able to with help from the players or the AFL.

I don't think they will match the Carlton offer if it is $2M...just sayin'

I don't think it works like that. Isn't it based on the total value of the contract?

edit.....article in the age by Niall suggests GWS just have to match the $ and the years.

For us, yes. For Essendon*, no.
Setterfield was their initial priority.

So are you saying if they got Setterfield they wouldn't have tried for Shiel?

2 year contract. 1.5 million per year.
Early next season, "negotiate" a contract extension, 3 years @ $450 per year.

If GWS match 2 years @$1.5m, he's all theirs.

Don't they have to match contract length as well?

i.e. As in the article, $7 million for 7 years.

I'm saying Setterfield was their priority last trade period and they upped the offer and terms for Shiel when Setterfield signed with us. I'm not saying they thought he was a better player at the time but that he represented far better value. Dodoro is a big fan.
Leading up to the 2016 draft, they were contemplating putting up Pick 1 for Setterfield instead of taking McGrath.

Yes, but the contract is say 2 years @$1.5m or $2m per year.
If they match, he's an unrestricted free agent in 2 years and they get nothing. If we pay him $2m per year for 2 years, the contract extention is 3 years at 150k per year. Announced next year.
If the AFL want to play dirty, I'm sure we can as well.

I must of missed that.
I though our contract offer was alleged to be appx. 1.2 - 1.3 mill per year for 7 years with an aggregated front end loading of 2 mill.

You can't beat the AFL at 'playing dirty'. They'll just change the rules to suit their agenda.

I don't doubt this. I'm fully expecting GCS and Demons to get first round PPs too.

So if we don't get Coniglio then do we go for Martin, Langdon and Zak Jones. Trading future picks, if we have enough.

Or CEY at Adelaide is an unrestricted free agent (not sure if he has signed).

Demons? After playing in a Prelim last year?

Not even the AFL could conjur a rule or a "formula" for that one.

It was a little tongue in cheek that one.
