I agree he isn't a forward, perhaps try HB see if he takes the ball and runs with, so to speak...

Hopefully the Indigenous Officer appointment will be announced soon and he’ll be able to straighten Pickett and Gartlett up

Pickett, Garlett, Le Bois , Lang , Polson and Cuningham all are under scrutiny 2019/20 .
These players have got to show some consistency and desire to work hard with some results in next two years latest, we can't carry all 6 beyond end 2020.

Apparently Michael Gibbons from Williamstown has been invited to train.

He's been a star in the VFA...oops... I mean VFL with Willy.

He would be one to fills one of the 2 vacant spots on our list.

Has tons of ability.

Look - there's a reason he's overlooked every year - and it's not his size. He'll get crucified at AFL level. He can find it, he can tackle, his peripheral vision is great, knows where the goals are - but he can't kick to a teammate. He's not a Paul Puopolo, despite having a similar build. He's let off the hook a bit because it blows a gale at Willy every second week from June, so everyone has clangers.

On the plus side - he'll have to be told to get off the track. He's a professional. Loves the gym and is a good bloke. I know he did improve his field kicking this year - so if the powers that be deem him to be at an AFL standard - then as soon as that navy blue jumper goes on, I'll support him to the hilt.

Blues invite two to train

Kreuzer: Players developing in ruck

CARLTON Football Club has invited Matthew Cottrell and Michael Gibbons to join the Club’s pre-season training program.

The pair have been given an opportunity to train at Ikon Park as part of the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP).

Cottrell and Gibbons will be able to train at the Club until February 28, after which the Club will have the option of adding either or both players to their list full-time before the SSP ends on March 15.

Cottrell, a wingman who possesses elite endurance, was a State middle distance runner through juniors before spending the last two years in the TAC Cup with the Dandenong Stingrays.

Gibbons is arguably the most-decorated player in the VFL currently, with two J. J. Liston Trophies (2016 & 2018) to his name. The 23-year-old, who has the ability to play both midfield and forward, is a natural ball-winner with great athletic ability and a supreme hunger for the contest.

Carlton List Manager Michael Agresta said the Club was looking forward to giving both players an opportunity to potentially join the AFL system.

“It’s terrific to have both Matthew and Michael join our pre-season program, they have great potential and are both extremely excited about this opportunity.

“We rated both players highly before the draft, so it is great we have another opportunity to get a look at them. They have the potential to further boost our midfield depth which we have really strengthened during the trade and draft period.”

GibbonsDec13Article
Williamstown's Michael Gibbons has won two J. J. Liston Trophies in the VFL.

While external commentary suggested the Blues may look to use the SSP to find a replacement for injured co-captain Sam Docherty, Agresta was clear that the current playing list already presented a wealth of options across halfback.

“You look at our list at is stands in that area of the ground with the experience of Kade Simpson and Dale Thomas, coupled with the dash of Tom Williamson Lochie O’Brien and the addition of Nic Newman.

“Lachie Plowman and Caleb Marchbank will also be back after their injuries last season so we are confident there is already healthy competition to fill that half-back position.

“Building strong depth across every position is important, that will be our focus as we finalise our playing list heading into the 2019 season.”

Haven't seen a huge amount of him; so I'll take your word for it. Action looks pretty solid though, at least on the left

As Andy Collins said, the guy deserves a chance at taking the next step.
Now he's got it. Good luck to him.

Are the VFL guys full time footballers, or do they have day jobs? I mean, if he can get (hopefully) top end full time training under his belt, then I think Gibbons has a chance to take things up a notch.

Even though he'll probably mainly play VFL, that will have to be a help to our young guys. If he can step up to AFL then that's a bonus. We get a free swing after Docherty's knee so literally we have nothing to lose. One 23 year old and one from TAC cup seems like a reasonable way to fill our list in the circumstances.
