Text - Leslie Stuart 1898 (1863-1928)

1. It's de same old tale of a palpatating niggar
ev'ry time, ev'ry time;
It's de same old trouble of a coon
Dat wants to be married very soon;
It's de same old heart dat is longing
for it's lady ev'ry time, yes ev'ry time,
But not de same gal, not de same girl
She is ma Lily, ma Lily, ma Lily gal!
She goes ev'ry sundown, yes, ev'ry sundown
Callin' in de cattle up de mountain;
I go kase she wants me, yes, 'kase she wants me
Help her do de callin' and de countin'.
She plays her music
To call de lone lambs dat roam above,
But I'm de black sheep and I'm waitin'
For de signal of ma little lady love.
2. When I first met Lil it was down at old Laguna
at de dance, oder night;
So she says: "Say, ah'm curious for to know
When ye leave here de way yer goin' to go,
'Kase a wants to see who de lady is
dat claims ye all way home, way home tonight."
I says, "I've no gal, never had one,"
And den ma Lily, ma Lily, ma Lily gal!
She says, "Kern't believe ye, a kern't believe ye,
Else I'd like to have ye shaperoon me;
Dad says he'll escorcht me, says he'll escorcht me,
But it's mighty easy for to lose him.
Since then each sun-down
I wander down here and roam around
Until I know ma little lady wants me,
Till I hear de music ob de signal sound.

Chorus:
She's my lady love,
She is my dove, my baby love,
She's no gal for sitting down to dream,
She's the only queen Laguna knows;
I know she likes me.
I know she likes me
Becase she says so;
She is ma Lily of Laguna.
She is ma Lily and ma Rose.

Who doesn't love belting out da da da da duh? Certainly not me.

But in 2018 its embarrassing to have this song with its I credibly racist connotations be linked with our club. It's amazing no one has brought it up before. It's difficult to justify keeping it in spite of its innocent traditions knowing it came from the ridicule of our African American brothers and sisters. We're better than this and it's not like we're hard up for alternatives either.

I think we should get rid of the Navy Blues because it descriminates againsts light blue, sky blue and pale blue
Cant believe we have a name that is so Racist.
Should be just Blues

I don't know if this is a parody post or not.

If those are the words, I think it's a legit post. Mind you, we use the tune, not the words, but still........

Yep...why not...let's change it again. Served us well for 50-odd years...we could revert to the one some board members tried to get over the line in 1951.

Well........F%^& me!
There you go!

Unfortunately there has been many a song made from the tune, chords or lyrics of other songs. And even though the lyrics of Lily of Laguna are racist, drawing a link as a possible issue with our club song is, well....the same as the Seraena Williams caricature. A non event and a lot of PC hot wind.

Still, very interesting to know where the tune came from, great work.

What was deemed OK in days gone by and is now deemed racist is s cyclic thing.
In a hundred years the term 'footy' will be deemed both offensive to amputees and too sexually explicit to use on public broadcasting because it will refer to a sex act performed by people with no hands.

We can stop using the 'n' word but we can't change history. The 'n' word to the spanish 'negro' is the same as 'breakie' is to 'breakfast'. Well it was in the beginning. The Spanish called them 'negros' which was anglicises to 'negroes' then in the south it became 'negras', 'nigras' and finally 'niggers'.

If it's so offensive to them, why do rappers constantly use it in their lyrics and in street talk?

The Carlton theme song was lifted from a popular ditty of the era. No mention of racism in any of the words they put to it. If the above post hadn't published the old lyrics ninety percent of TCers wouldn't have known about them.

Add this to the degrading of the value of our 16 VFL cups as a non-issue.

Or change it to a current song popular with the youngsters. Maybe something by Daddy Gangsta so the players can all twerk to it after the game as they change the lyrics from bashing and raping 'hos' to vanquishing all and sundry teams we play against.

Here's a suggestion based on what's being played on radio at the moment. It's deemed acceptable by mainstream listeners or it would be banned.

We the effing Navy Blues
The old effing Navy Blues.
We're gonna slap them bitches ass
Use them like witches hats
Then we're gonna slap the others
Gonna domin-ate those mothers
Coz we're the effing Navy Blues.

What about 'The Blues are back in town" from Thin Lizzy???

Or "And I guess that's why they call us the Blues" from Elton

I personally would love the second one to be our theme before the game. Could we ask Sir Elton to re-perform it with different lyrics?

Would cost a shitload but you know what, imagine us all singing it prior to a big game at the 'G (and then get belted by 128 points with a coach sacking on the Monday) :wink: :wink:

marketing dept...get onto it...It's a real winner

Correction. We'd sing "I guess that's why the call us the Blues" AFTER the 128 point drubbing.

Love the Thin Lizzy suggestion. Up and about! The 2nd idea re Elton..totally depressing...worst idea ever...total downbuzz before a game. Our own theme is already slow. :lol:
Doc...I like the upbeat spirit of the 'blue and white'and the opportunity for crowd chants in it... but too much 'beating up, black and blue' in the lyric.
Also too much 'white' we aint The Cats!! Would need lyric adjustment but I like the upbeat spirit.

As for the dilemma posed,
The song was already repurposed before our club adopted it.

fresh lyrics[1]and it was stripped of its overtly racist lyrics to become a pure love song which continued to be popular into the 1950s

I think it is a good thing to upcycle the best melodic part and adapt its lyrical content. Something good that comes from ignorance overturned. The 1st adaptation was successful because the bones of a good tune were always there. The original lyric was part of a genre which happily is no longer tolerated. The lyric we would have adapted from was the 2nd version as stated above. :beer:

Seriously, if the AFL brings in the 666 Rule, that'd just be a promoter's dream.

Up the irons!
