THE Carlton Football Club has welcomed two new members into its prestigious Hall of Fame, with Lance Whitnall and Brent Crosswell proudly inducted on Friday at Etihad Stadium.

Established in 1987, the Hall of Fame recognises the contributions made to the Club by individuals throughout the course of its illustrious history. With the induction of Whitnall and Crosswell, a total of 79 greats of the game are now part of the Hall, 13 of whom have since earned Legend status.

A great result and 2 excellent Carlton footballer s and well deserved
Saw both play cross well one of the most mercurial and brilliant ever to play for Carlton
Lance much maligned but a very smart footballer playing over 200 games in the hardest position on the field

Brent Crosswell was my hero as a young Tassie boy watching a legend at Scotch College jump over 6 ft with a scissor jump off two steps, win the 100yds, 200yds and 400yds all in one afternoon then straight to the '68 premiership the next year. He is the reason I am a Carlton person. An enigma and legend all rolled into one.

If you haven't seen them, watch the 1968 and 1970 grand finals. They may not have been our best players. But Crosswell (along with Jezza) are the 2 most exciting players we've had in the last 50 years. Absolutely football rolled gold.

Whitnall was pretty good too. I agree, he'd have been special, if he'd played in an earlier, less professional/athletic generation.

Just on that, Crosswell WAS our best player in the 1970 GF. And probably the most gifted player I've ever seen. Truly able to play on every position.

Best quarter I've seen was against hawthorn in 1969, when he kicked 4 goals from the wing....... in the last quarter.

My mate Mike Guest (now passed), whom you may know, told me the story which I have posted here before that at Scotch, someone was assigned to clip him under the ear at the start of the game to fire him up.

BS - there are so many stories about him during his final two years at Scotch.

Why so long for Tiger?

If it's based of football ability he should have been inducted into the HOF in 1623.

Yep crosswell was a star. Closest type to him was Kouta. Brent was lightning quick, an excellent mark , and bog in 1970 and won north their first in 1975. Two norm Smith's for him. Such a tragedy he has battled illness so long. Apart from 1970 my favourite memory is last game in 1971. Mile's behind pies Brent to full forward. Matchwinner.

I have no idea of how the selections are made, but (meaning no disrespect to those named) just to pluck 3 names how on earth do Mil Hanna, Tom Alvin and Peter McConville make the Hall of Fame before Tiger Crosswell? Just defies all logic.

As I understand part of the character of “Geoff Hayward” in David Williamson’s “The Club” was based on Brent Crosswell.

As a player, the best way I can describe him is he had the athleticism of Kouta, the mercurialness of Bosustow and the aggression of Rhys-Jones.

Even though he was a fantastic finals player and won two premierships with us, I don’t think he was a consistently great player, he really only turned it on in big games or when the mood took him, still I was pretty upset when we he left Carlton.

He drove Barassi to distraction for that very reason. He played on pure natural ability, which Barassi always said was not as good as having to work to improve yourself. They apparently had a pretty fiery relationship and maybe the master was needed to tame the student at that time. One wonders how Bolts would go with him, trying to tell him not to attack all the time but to play chippy chippy around the defensive 50...
