This is just so stupid it can't happen.

Players and coach have their careers on the line as it is, now they need to adapt to an experiment because our season is now irrelevant to the AFL.

How about showing us some respect.

If I was a player who's career was on the line, I'd jump at an opportunity to prove myself in a modified format.

Seriously though... joke of a sport

But then again, the AFL may force Bolts to play our forwards... ahem... in the forward 50? :yikes:

This is the organisation that went berserk about rumours of tanking because every game MUST be treated with 100% seriousness. Right?

Mind you, if it makes any difference whatsoever with regards to a PP, (which I'd doubt), I say go for it!

I've seen too many games where there is a total of less than 10 goals between 2 teams at half time. The game has become too compressed and defensive. IMHO, the coaches are destroying the spectacle.
I'm a huge footy fan but this year I've turned over numerous games to watch the NRL or just turned it off. The game is becoming almost unwatchable IMHO.
I'm all for change.

Well then lets go back and see which rule changes may have contributed to the demise of Aussie Rules within the AFL framework to create this highly compressed game which looks like rugby. Here's a couple:

1. 19th and 20th Man instead of Interchange
2. Calling "Play on" when a pack starts to appear, ie starts to look like rugby
3. Increase of interchange/ bench from 2 to 4

There's plenty of reasons why the pioneers of our game created the rules, and the AFL has gone on non stop and tampered with them so much the game looks like rugby auls, and kids games, due to young umpires following the AFL.

I bet any money that as soon as we revert to the 2 basic rules I grew up with (point 1 and 2 above) the game will be closer to what our fore fathers desired, and relieve ourselves of all this congestion.

This organisation, the makey uppey one, is the most unprofessional, incompetent and egotistical bunch of fools I have seen in my life.
Its amazing what TV rights dollars has turned these men into.

I'd love to turn off my love for the game.

Don't think we will like the interchange cap with the little notice they have given and our long injury list/young list.
Don't think we should agree to that rule change at this time of the year. The others I'm happy with

Might help us given we usually have only two on the bench still playing and our opponents are running at twice the rotation number

The AFL always look at rule changes to address symptom of problems usually of their own making.

A root cause analysis should be conducted to address the real driver of why the game had got so congested.

Q. What's the problem?
A. Game overly congested
Q. Why?
A. Coaching tactics place emphasis on defence
Q. Why?
A. Coaches don't want shootout
Q. Why?
A. Shootouts lower ladder percentage

As an example a 10 point win of 50 vs 60 will result in an percentage of 120% however the same 10 point win of 100 vs 110 will result in a percentage of 110%. I bet you can guess which would be the more entertaining game to watch.

So rather than all this starting position BS, just fix the way the percentage works on the ladder and coaches will open up the game more

Given we’re usually 1-2 players short by half time this will help even the playing field with the opposition.

Aren’t we all forgetting how Carlton trialled the centre square in a game for premiership points in the 60’s (I think)?

How is this any different?

True

Intersting that Carlton ran 11 kms more than Hawks on Saturday and 3 kms more of fast running with 2 players down.

These kids can run!

Investment with the future changes in mind?

I’m in two mins over this.

My first reaction was that we shouldn’t be treated like guinea pigs and the AFL should stop being so makeyuppy.

However, on the other hand it could be argued that any such game trialling new rules could be among the most important games of the year, from a big picture perspective. Equally, as small as the benefit may be, should the rules trialled be introduced in the following year we will have practical experience.

Still not convinced that trials should be done in season, but if it were, I suspect it’d barely be a footnote when looking back in years to come.

The game was barely professional 50 years ago, it’s very much a different competition today than what it was in the 60’s.

Agree. It was a sport then, now it's a business.

Back then they were probably just trying to make it a better game for everyone.
Now they just want more goals.
More goals = more ads.
More ads = more lovely $$$$$
And that's what it's all about now.
