He'd be wasted in the VFL. Even if he plays as a small forward, he's still great value.

The problem is small forwards are expected to apply pressure and tackle, something murphy’s not renowned for.
Averages 5.8 tackles a game
What a stupid statement
Only Curnow and Cripps average more

891 tackles
240 games

Averages 3.71 tackles a game over his career and exactly the same over the last four years.

Averages 5.75 over his only four games this year.

And then you need to ask how many of them stuck and were effective.

Maybe they meant contusion not concussion and that lead to the confusion.

Still 4 tackles a game over his career that is not to shabby particularly for a bloke of his size .
We have all been lauding the efforts of Simpson this week he averages 2.7 tackles a game

Dustin Martin 3.2

Ed Curnow who is in the side as a negating midfielder averages 5.3

Over the last three years Murphy was ranked 10th, 10th and 9th at Carlton for average tackles per game. Tackles are one measure of application of pressure, but not the only measure. I stand by my comment, he's not renowned for a high pressure game, which is required as a small forward. Don't get me wrong, hes been a good midfielder over his career, I just don't think he's that defensive/high pressure midfielder.

Problem that Murphy has is stuffed shoulders which don’t allow him to stick hard tackles that he has to reach out for (Vs this he can get his body behind).
I always worry we bring back players before ready.
However:
A) 50% fit Murphy in our forward line will still help us dictate their defensive structure, he’ll still cause trouble for Port and he is still better than any other options we have
B) If he is stretching himself to support his good Carlton mate for his 300th, isn’t that exactly the kind of club man/leader we want him to be? Isn’t that showing that he wants to play for Carlton? Isn’t that much better the Ablett who wouldn’t play unless he was feeling 100% or Wells who is similar?

Possibly but he's better than any of the alternatives IMO. Personally, I'm pleased to see him back.

I’m pleased Murph is back too. I just hope he isn’t going to Adrian Whitehead himself.

I have a 5 week old and my Mum wanted me to visit her on Saturday. Massive Carlton supporter my Mum, so I told her it’s Simpson’s 300th, you come here. Done!

This game means the world for Carlton. If they do a Freo or GC, players should be sacked end of year.

If we lose I’m ok with that, we aren’t expected to win, but effort and playing for your life is not negotiable this game.

Scrap, hit, hurt, do everything for Simmo. He has done that for 300 games.
