Carlton has made a bold play to poach highly rated Collingwood assistant coach Justin Longmuir.

Longmuir is favourite the senior coaching job at Fremantle and is expected to have formal talks with the Dockers as soon as Collingwood's flag campaign finishes.

But it has emerged that the Blues are also extremely keen to land the Pies' defensive specialist.

New Carlton coach David Teague and Longmuir continue to have a strong relationship after their time together at West Coast from 2011.

It is understood that Teague and Longmuir are staying in touch, and discuss football theories and tactics.

Longmuir would effectively become Teague's right-hand man at Carlton, however Collingwood would make every effort to keep him at the Holden Centre.

Nathan Buckley has lauded Longmuir's contribution to the Magpies over the past two seasons.
