Excellent interview with Andrew Russell. Very in-depth. Start about 90 sec in.

really interesting stuff. I wonder if most of what he said about his typical day was what was always done or if he has already instituted any new approaches?

He’s focused, dynamic just inspiring ‘ really admire his holistic approach of a healthy mind and solid physical culture. He’s the real deal should see some positive changes late season and more so in 2020.

I may have mentioned this elsewhere. My hawks mate, who absolutely hates Carlton & never has a positive word to say about us, basically said that this bloke is an even better get for us than Judd.

You'd hope so...Judd was a disaster for us.

Cost us Kennedy, Masten and Notte.

Mate's son is a very good young middle distance runner, who trained with Olympian Jeff Risely. They were coached by Russell and did running sessions with the Hawks during pre season at Waverley. If any guy rocked up to training wearing thongs, Andy would cut them up on the spot and tell them never to wear them again or expect more of the same. Hard arse dude....real pro....just what we need

If he was under any illusion before about how much work was needed to get our players right, he sure as shit wouldn't be now.

Hawk ball-magnet named the players' No.1

CARLTON champion Greg Williams is back with the Blues.

AFL.com.au understands the dual Brownlow medallist has accepted an invitation from co-captain Patrick Cripps and emerging onballer Paddy Dow to provide personalised coaching.

One of the club's most decorated players as a Team of the Century member, it will be Williams' first role with the playing group since his specialist training role in the early 2000s.

While plans to work with Cripps and Dow are in their infancy, the 1995 premiership player spent Friday at Ikon Park and is expected to be used semi-regularly throughout 2019.

The approach from Cripps came after several conversations with Williams in recent years with the one-on-one education to be formalised in coming weeks.

When Cripps arranged to meet with Williams he was also greeted by 2017 NAB AFL Draft No.3 pick Dow, who has high aspirations to increase his output in his second AFL season.

Williams will only be providing teaching to Cripps and Dow and will not be part of the official coaching panel, with his nous to be used in conjunction with midfield coaches John Barker and Cameron Bruce.

Find AFL Exchange on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify.

His training is expected to include specific kicking and handballing skills, stoppage work and identification of roles within gameplans.

Dow has also reached out to former AFL assistant coach David Newett to improve his kicking in weekly sessions in his time away from the Blues.

Part of a nucleus of young Blues midfielders, Dow has also leant heavily on the feedback from former captain Marc Murphy, who has also taken Sam Walsh and Sam Petrevski-Seton under his wing.

Williams' appointment makes him one of several club legends involved in the Blues' rebuild, with former captain Chris Judd now football director and premiership coach Robert Walls in a coaching advisory role.

It comes as Williams continues to consult a number of star midfielders across the competition.

The former Cat, Swan and Blue has assumed a part-time mentoring position with Brisbane recruit Lachie Neale which is already reaping benefits.

He has also previously transformed Tom Mitchell into a Brownlow medallist, while working in the past with former Essendon* captain Jobe Watson and the Bombers' midfield group.

Forget Barker and Bruce , Greg Williams is the one we need full in time post mentor coach for our mids.
An absolute priority.
Cripps, Walsh , Dow , SPS , Stocker, Fisher , Setterfield and O’Brien,
develop into a mighty midfield force. A real spring board to our attack.
