Blues move to poach Magpie assistant

– Jay Clark

Carlton has made a bold play to poach highly rated Collingwood assistant coach Justin Longmuir.

Longmuir is favourite the senior coaching job at Fremantle and is expected to have formal talks with the Dockers as soon as Collingwood's flag campaign finishes.

But it has emerged that the Blues are also extremely keen to land the Pies' defensive specialist.

New Carlton coach David Teague and Longmuir continue to have a strong relationship after their time together at West Coast from 2011.

It is understood that Teague and Longmuir are staying in touch, and discuss football theories and tactics.

Longmuir would effectively become Teague's right-hand man at Carlton, however Collingwood would make every effort to keep him at the Holden Centre.

Nathan Buckley has lauded Longmuir's contribution to the Magpies over the past two seasons.

If Carlton is successful, clubs are expected to come for highly-rated Carlton senior assistant coach John Barker.

Barker has knocked back approaches from other clubs in the past, but the developments around Longmuir are likely to rivals renew their interest.

Posters on BF saying Josh Carr will coach Freo, was at odds of $41 and now at $5.

If this happens, its a big result. I know there was major drums beating that Peter Bell (Freo Gen Manager Footy ops) loves Longmuir and wanted him big time as the next head coach.

Would be an amazing result for Carlton, he is very very highly rated.

Well things change pretty quickly...

But even before the formal interview, Sumich had confided in friends his wariness of Fremantle’s process. Players were certainly under the impression – either from Bell or other senior members of the club – that Longmuir was the overwhelming favourite. This remains so.

Senior Collingwood and Carlton figures - who both have invested interest in Longmuir - also share the view that the job will be his.

What is astounding about this is how it’s leaked into media.

Either Sumich or the panel has leaked it.

If the contents of how I interviewed for the position I’m in now appeared in the papers I’d be horrified. If Sumich has dropped this bomb as a final act of self-destruction, it’s not a good look. If the Freo panel let it out then it’s extraordinarily unprofessional.

I would say Longmuir manager started that leak to drive up his price and force Freos hand

I don't believe anyone needed to leak to the media about Sumich's ineptitude. Just listening to him telegraphs it.

But how would Longmuir's manager know what happened in the Sumich interview?
