From leagues greatest powerhouse to perennial cellar dweller ... what happened?

The tried and trusted method of simply buying the best players, (or getting them from our Bendigo zone), was voided and we were too slow to recognise this. The AFL’s excessive penalties prolonged this.

We decided the draft was the way to go and went at it with gusto. It helped, but whilst the early picks were ok, we didn’t get enough value from the mid-range. Ironically we seemed to do better with rookie picks.

We decided we a big fish was the answer and got a beauty, again this helped. Judd gave good value, but it wasn’t enough.

Next we tried a super coach. Fair to say that didn’t work out so well. MM was out of date and created a climate that made some players look elsewhere. He also brought in a fish of his own, at great expense. At least we’re getting some value out of Daisy now.

Finally we decide that we needed to take a chance on an untried coach, one with exposure to modern success. With his encouragement steps have been taken to improve our culture and move the workplace into the 21st century. We figured out that maybe if we keep drafting poorly it’s time to replace the recruiters. Things are looking better in this area and we’ve got a good number of young kids to be excited about. In my opinion we still need a few more and must also work hard to keep the talent we’ve got.

I don’t care much for losing, but I’m not that interested in building a team that’ll take us to the bottom half of the eight. I want 18 and I think that we’re heading towards it. I just hope they have the courage to stay the course.

We cheated (like many other teams) and got caught and punished.

We had a deadbeat president who oversaw salary cap cheating.

Said deadbeat president put himself first by signing Pagan in a poor attempt to save his own skin.

We kept Kernahan on the board after the salary cap cheating.

Worse, we allowed him to be president.

I hate to say it, but Kernahan's legacy as a player has been tarnished by his legacy as an administrator.

The draft was introduced in 1986 and it took us around 30 years to take it seriously.

That's a few reasons.

Yep. I take full responsibility. I left the day Essendon* beat us in July 200o and we have been poor ever since. Heading back home for good June 2019 so everything will improve then. #17 is not too far away

Sold all St Helens holdings and have built just outside Sale in Victoria. Still a Tasmanian at heart.
