Charlie Curnow pleading not guilty to intentional umpire contact, but prepared to plead guilty to careless umpire contact

Hopefully Ed does the same. I reckon the afl we’re keen for Tomahawk to accept the penalty and not challenge it because it could be murky, I hope we claim reckless rather than intentional.

Chairman David Jones asks the Tribunal: "Are you clearly satisfied on teh balance of probablities he intentionally made contact with the umpire?".

Umpire Williamson didn’t feel threatened and had no issue with the incident.

Curnow shook his hand after the game and says he never intended to make contact in the incident.

Carlton say
Clarke: Accidental contact, careless, some would describe it as benign. Not done in anger and it's not done in a situation where there's dispute with the umpire's decision, since Curnow said he accepted the call.

Also significant that while the umpire recollected touching occurred, he thought nothing of it.

The differences, according to Woods
Woods on Sheed footage: Points out ball was in play, Sheed was running towards the ball and trying to contest, and also there was no evidence, based on the footage, that Sheed didn't know the person he was coming into contact with an umpire.

Difference with Curnow is eye contact was made, eye contact is unbroken when contact is made with chest, player's arm then extends - Woods not suggesting it's a pushing motion, more player moving away - but it's telling that the arms stays there.

Not hostile contact but it was intentional.

The Tribunal is deliberating
Again, Wayne Henwood, Jason Johnson and Stewart Loewe will decide Curnow's fate.

Carlton say
Clarke: Curnow's focus is to get on with the match, even after Stringer bumps him to the ground.

"The touching was so light that the umpire, who was in very close quarters, didn't move back whatsoever, despite the contest and most importantly, while recalling it, thought nothing of it. That's the most compelling evidence. We want it to be found on the balance of probabilities that the contact made was careless or accidental, and not intentional."

@#$%&! me, this tribunal is a petty state of affairs.

in future turds, lets save everyone's time, and unless the umpire reports it, lets just move on.
