This is a must. We have the footage, newspaper votes etc. that confirm Crane deserved it for 1968.

It is time to introduce retrospective Norm Smiths.

Newspaper votes rated Crane as best, Nicholls 2nd. Get it done AFL.

Somewhat off topic as I get we are looking at the pre-Norm Smith Medal era, but FWIW:

Wayne Johnston or Mike Fitzpatrick should have got it in 82. Rioli was a joke.

Peter Francis in 79? Harmes had his moments but wasn't BOG.

Kouta might have been stiff in 95. Most of Diesel's damage was after the game was shot.

Agree with most of this. Still think Peter Dean was BOG in 95 though.

95:
1. Williams deserved it - consistent throughout
2. Kouta - quiet 3rd quarter for some reason, at least compared to Williams
3. Dean

87:
I was busy, and confess that I still haven't watched it properly - something to look forward to. Rhys-Jones has never seemed a controversial decision

82:
Johnno for sure

79:
Buckley - Lou got it right. I've watched it umpteen times, and in a game that lots of cameos and dominant periods from several players, Jimmy was great across the whole game

72:
Have to watch it a few more hundred times (oh joy).

70:
Wasn't there, and only have the official vid that I've watched quite a bit.
I know you're adamant about Croswell, Moshe, but give McKay some consideration. Despite some goals kicked on him, great job, and very stiff to get a nothing free kick against him in the last, as we were surging. At least, that's how I remember it. Maybe I need to watch it again...and again...and again...

68:
Probably Crane. Kekovich not a bad effort to slot 4 out of 7 on a horribly windy day. Have to watch this one a few more times (not an attractive game though).

Was easily best on podium in 1987.

The Sun newspaper gave votes as following

19 votes - Gary Crane
12 votes - John Nicholls
2 votes - Ian Collins.

Surely they can just award them their medals....just say Gary Crane - Norm Smith Medal (Retrospective *)

* retrospective based on the votes accrued by the Sun Newspaper at the time.
I am pretty sure The Age gave similar votes.

Or if the AFL doesn't trust The Sun newspaper they could accrue a new panel and get them to vote on it...eg Leigh Matthews, Tony DeBolfo etc...or whoever they want.

Brent Crosswell could be a dual Norm Smith medallist (14 votes 1970 g/f...McKay - 4 votes) and then he could have won it for 1975 when at North....
not sure of the votes in that match, but I guess Rantall would get it if Crosswell didn't for that match as he annihilated Leigh Matthews.

These people are legends of the sport and deserve their recognition.

Nice one...I agree with your selections !!.....
all but 1979...I would have stuck with Harmes. I know Francis was great, but Harmes did something that everyone will remember for the rest of football eternity.

1981- Kinda agree with you, but I would have given it to either Hunter, Harmes (I have a slight Harmes bias) or Johnston. Probably Johnston. He set the tone with his attack on the ball.

1987- ok with DRJ winning it. It was a psychological lift he gave his team by beating the Hawthorn lair with the fluro boots...but based on who played best I thought Johnston had a great 1st half but faded. Glascott was good throughout....and had a harder task-taking on Platten. I would have given it to Glascott. Just personal opinion.

1995 - Williams BOG.

That’s what I was referring to but thought it was 87.

I could be wrong.

It almost happened once before...
