We went in top heavy in our backline in round 1 last year and we did it again ... we knew what type of team and system they would play but didn't select accordingly ... Weitering played as a forward in round 1 last year and kicked 3 from memory

Also lacking damage in our forward line when the ball hit the ground

Overall there are signs of improvement

I thought we erred at selection. Playing Marchbank, Plowman, Jones and Weitering in the backline really hurt us. Byrne and Simpson were our small defenders with Mullet on the wing.
I'd rather Cuningham as an extra small defender, especially against the Richmond small forward line.
We allowed Richmond to be proactive by accepting Townsends job on Jones. Instead we should have pushed Jones to Riewoldt. Weitering didnt really have a match up and could have gone forward. Especially once Casboult was pushed into the ruck,
Plowman had to play on the smalls when he was probably better suited to Townsend. The extra tall defenders reduced our flexibility significantly.

Silvagni had a shocker and unfortunately reasonable footy smarts aren't enough when you don't have any other strengths. Having him and Lamb up forward makes us too slow up front.

Positives? Cripps obviously, Marchbank is super courageous, Charlie, Kreuz, Fisher (I love this kids smarts).
The commentators have carried on about our accuracy but its not an accident. The way we played JLT and again tonight, we're hitting up within 30 metres of goal and in the corridor. Richmond were often forced wide which contributed to trheir inaccuracy.
We'll win plenty of games by having less inside 50s. Its not a weakness but more a strategic style of ball movement,
We are very exciting at times, we just have to hone our faster style of game.
Get Byrne to run into space instead of running to the defender and then trying to evade him would be a good start.

Hopefully Kennedy comes up. He's huge value to us.

Injuries should save a couple of players from the axe this week.

Nice post BV......summed it up very well for mine.

I knew we were too tall/slow down back versus the Tiges. Plow always struggles on the nippy little guys. Liam too was found wanting once it hit the deck.....he's much better suited to Reeevolt.

Great games from Cripps and Marchbank.....both fearless players. Thought Garlett was good and added the zip and X factor we've lacked. Charlie is such a raw talent.....this could well be his break out game. He presented very well and his height mobility and leap means he takes a lot of marks uncontested in front of packs.

Fisher was great in patches but still a kid and will get a lot better. Thought Dow showed enough to know he'll be a gun pretty soon, but MCG and 90k is a huge cauldron for an 18yo first game !

Love Wrighty's way of playing. 5 goals enough said. Losing Kennedy and Kreuz effectively ended our night IMHO.

Samo did some classy things but overall was off his best. I would like to see him let off the leash and asked to run with the ball more. He is a JET and changes direction so quickly...he did it late in the last. If he started to do this, add Pickett and Garlett and wow, we are very dangerous and fast !

Would have played Cunners against them too, and really think he's in our best 22. He and Willo will both be part of our next flag push.

On to the bad news......
SOJ won't make it for mine. Just an in between player....not fast enough, not tall enough, not hard enough, not strong enough. Gone in 2 years. Both bros are guns or so they say so bring 'me on !

JW was woeful tonight. Insipid and terrible decisions. His set shot from 50 was pathetic. But he's too classy to write off and should bounce back in time.

Love Bunson and his come back story, but he was ordinary tonite, getting caught too many times. He's better that. Can bounce back.

Levi is just not a forward and a B grade ruck. Not on our premiership list. Desperately need big H to reach the required level. In H we trust !!

Reckon we can finish 12thish this year and push for finals next year.

Just home from game.

Also, Murphy looks cooked, not just as a tackler but even with the ball his decision making and disposal were always a fraction too slow and a fraction too imprecise. Which against the Premiers doesn't bode well.

Yep, cooked. Hasn’t won a B&F for at least 6 months now. Pitiful.

Would not have been any where near it if Cripps had stayed fit.

Not really, since Cripps was 5th in the voting at the time of his injury. Image

I agree that SOJ won’t make it. He tries hard but doesn’t have the tools to succeed. I predict he will drop out of the side at some stage this year. Reckon Lang in that area of the field would work a lot better.

The sooner we don’t have to play Casboult the better, but we have been saying that for years.

Jones wasn’t great, same with Weitering. Murphy was meh, Lamb a place holder and Dow wasn’t great.

The positives are Cripps is a beast, could win a brownlow
Fisher very good
Charlie awesome
Wright very smart good footballer
Garlett good signs
Great to have Ed back
Simmo very good

The injuries didn’t help but I’m still pissed off at the loss and the fact we had so many guys down. We had a few outstanding performers but we need more pulling their weight.

If we can win at least 3 of our next 4 I’ll be happy.

Totally agree soj is doubtful too slow, no strength
Weitering is miles off afl finals level. Deficient in speed and strength.
Garlett great but must tackle
Jones worst game at fullback for the club.
Kids must play before thomas
Murphy is a wingman only now.
Must select greater genuine midfield depth to make finals this year as our risk is being blown away in the last qtr.
Kerridge, cunningham lang must play to replace kennedy (inj), thomas and lamb

Backline too tall and forward line too slow.

We had some outstanding performers tonight but we had too many under performers.

Doch just proved to me tonight how important he is to our backline.

Fisher showed again that he is going to hurt sides.

It's been a long time since we've had that from our key small / rover.

Compare his use of handball with our other key smalls.

Well, I’m not going to beat up on anyone.
We are a young side finally playing offensive footy.
There’s going to be mistakes. We have to iron out the kinks to drive forward.
We cant expect some of these kids to stand up mature body’s.

Right now it’s about building a solid experienced list.

We challenged Richmond and for that I’m proud.
I haven’t been this happy with Carlton in a long time.
We are in no position to be challenging for finals yet we took it the Premiers.

It’s all about building this year.

Improving and finding our needs.

I think we’ll make the 8 next year

Don't want to bag the kid but Paddy Dow's disposal is a bit of a worry. Didn't hit the target too many times and the bit in the last quarter where he kicked over the leading Kreuzer's head was very costly, resulting in a goal down the other end.

It's a big ask stepping into an atmosphere like that in your first game though. He'll only get better hopefully.

This is why I was on the Cerra bandwagon... he's a great kick of the footy. If Paddy can be a bit more tidy though, he has all the other tools.

Very proud but ultimately frustrated with the outcome which speaks volumes of how far we have come. We are building. Good list management and a great coaching set up. I know it's sour grapes but some of the tackling related free kicks were astonishingly inconsistent and bad.

On the positives, we have two incredibly elite players in Curnow and Cripps. I haven't seen as brave hearted a performance from a Blue in recent times than Cripps's game last night. He was huge and it's so exciting. I thought Simpson, Fisher and Wright were great too. Ultimately, the loss of Kennedy and Kreuzer robbed us of first use and put too much on too few others.

Like others have said, no point beating up on blokes even though we carried a few because they all had a dip. In a nutshell, the defense needs to kill the ball when it comes in and our other forwards need to do more.

Finally, I don't understand the criticism of Daisy Thomas. I thought he played his guts out tonight and his decision making was very good. He has football smarts and you can see he is growing. Hopefully, he can stay injury free.

The challenge now will be to feel the pain of the loss and grow from it. The transformation of the list is ultimately the thing that I am most excited about. We are a playing group on the rise.

As weird as this sounds, as soon as we were 5 goals up I got that worried feeling. We are never safe when we are 5 goals up & never out of it when 5 down!

Bit of a strange game, given we had a number of players have absolutely rubbish nights, yet we were still in it until half way through the last. I was pleased to see that, like in so many games last year, we kept at it & wouldn't go away.

Kennedy looked really good early, & I liked Garlett's game, did some nice things.

Hope we knew what we were doing sending Matty K back on...we've done some stupid things in this regard over the years.

Been a while since we've had two players leading the Coleman

I was there, haven't seen the replay... BUT We need to clarify with the umpires. Either it's a free or we start doing it.
Same goes with pushing (with forearms?!) a player under the ball miles before the marking contest.
I don't know what is a free any more but these were deliberate strategies that worked. Two missed spoils, and we couldn't get out of our defence as Caz and Curnow were pushed under.
Frustrating night.
We're not as bad as the scoring shots show.
We carved them up through the middle, they were wide,. We didn't need to ping from distance, they did...
We have to learn a few things.
After the 5th goal, we pounced around. Every Carlton player should have been into his opponents face. Start the ball up with a free and it's just about game over right there.
They got that dodgy free and sure as shit they were into ours. Once that second arsy goal was in.. We did nothing and again they were into us...
Anyway, too many comments... That's just the first 15 minutes.

Loved
Curnow
Fisher
Garlett
SPS. and Cripps
Did I mention Cripps?
and Cripps...
Cripps was good too.
Kruezer going down hurt as well as Kennedy, But we need to rotate Caz through the ruck more often, as well as how we set up with each ruck there. Game in the balance at the start of the last and we had an inexperienced midfield at one point, the ball went straight to Dustin with no one on him... Bad time to roll THAT dice (that we would win the tap).
Lots of good signs. We have to be smarter about what happens when and read the flow of the game or quarter....

Go you good things

If that's the colour of your faeces, I'd advise you to go see a doctor... A gastrointestinal specialist probably. Good luck. Let us know how you go.

And apologies to Wright and Marchbank.
Wright will be kicking his lips with this game plan....
He'll be our top scorer this year methinks... Too smart and hard to match up on if there is quick ball movement

Go you good things

That passage of play early in the third quarter I think it was, where we ran the ball through the middle and got a goal.... that was a highlight for me.
