Don't really want to bag him but Murphy, as a leader, just not up to it. Hope that effort is not the norm for the season.

Saw him 3 times went for the bump instead of making a tackle, ended with only 1 tackle in the entire game.

This shitty debate comes up every year. No, Murphy isn’t going to rack up massive amounts of tackles, he’s not going to be a bull in the contest. That’s not his go. Never has been. He’ll take the hits when it’s his turn, but Murphy’s strength and toughness is in his willingness to gut run when others don’t. The stats were shown a couple times tonight, Murphy covers more ground than just about anyone. He does every week. His leadership is better now than it has ever been. The players respect it and have consistently voted him into the role. Let’s appreciate what we have, a classy player, a player who consistently runs hard, a player that has been loyal when not many others have.

A lot of good points in your post. Much respect.
But to play devil's advocate if he racks up so many kms shouldn't he have got a bit more of the ball? His numbers for an experienced quality midfielder were pretty average.
Furthermore for a class player he had little to no impact in the second half.

Understand your point, but only 6 guys got more of the ball than Murph last night. 2 of those were Martin and Cripps, who played fantastic games.

Btw, have seen the criticism of Murphy only having 1 tackle last night, have also seen the praise for Zac Fisher’s game, which also consisted of 1 tackle. Meanwhile, Martin will poll Brownlow votes, also had 1 tackle.

Fair to say it wasn’t Murph’s best game, but immediate criticism of his leadership and claims that he’s cooked are just so premature it’s not funny.

Mind you, it's a dumb @#$%&! rule in the first place. If at all, it should simply be that any player within 10 metres of the player when he's called to play on cannot tackle the player with the footy.

That's nice of them, but did they comment on Thomas being penalised for a legitimate handball and also not being awarded a clear mark?

Or all of the dropping the ball calls they didnt make against Richmond?

Or Dustin Martin’s fend offs to the throat - which seem to have been given the Lance “Natural Arc” Franklin AFL tick of approval

Apparently OK to tackle around the ankles too... Especially if it's a crap tackle and slides down to the ankles,..AH Yes, Yes, Yes that's OK.....

SINCE WHEN.?

Hits after the ball is delivered, well after (my biggest gripe)
Blocking in marking contests
Holding and shepherding off the ball

Going by the premiers, all of these tactics are allowed in 2018........

Positives:
The list is improving
tb had to fabricate a rationale as to why his Nostradumbass like prediction didn't materialise
Marchbank et al

Negatives:
SOJ is overrated and overhyped
Cunningham is definitely a whipping boy at the selection table. Was ropeable when he wasn't selected
Casboult
Is it the game plan or are we the only team that cannot create separation on opponents??????
Weitering to FF was the obvious solution for team balance and maybe his confidence
Byrne had a shocker
Kennedy's injury-he plays all game and we push them to within 2 goals!!!
SPS doesn't do enough

How far away is Patrick Kerr? Can we just gift him 2-3 games? After all, SOJ has been gifted about 20 of them just because of his lineage

SOJ was gifted his rising star nomination! Lineage must have done it!

Yeah he got it in 1 game. What's your point?
He was poor last night but he's had many poor games. Needs a spell in the ressies.
Let's see if and when that happens

the protection of this endangered species will apparently continue well into this year

no mention of the tunneling, behind the play cheap body shots or wrong/no decisions to advantage the champs in their heroic comeback

one game and i've already had a gut full of the slanted commentators and the propaganda machine

Unbearable already. If Carlton aren't involved I can't/won't watch

The Kerr family has credentials in the lineage stakes too.

Only one poor game this year. You do know how young he is, don't you?

Should have been a 6-8 goal loss. We allow way too many I50s for the opposition. That will continue as we are only just now learning offense and so defence will suffer in the short term.

The umpires gifted them about 4 goals as well, or don't those count?
As for Inside 50's they're almost irrelevant. Hawthorn smashed us for Inside 50s last week as well and we won the game. Our structure is forcing teams wide and last night, like last week, the opposition are taking plenty of their shots from out wide, hence the scoring efficiency. I'd suggest in fact that Richmond were fortunate to have scored the amount of goals they did.
We on the other hand are taking most of our shots within 40 and within the corridor. Both are an outcome of our game style. Not an accident.

I think I like this post.

and trublu is a @#$%&! banana,

Ok that's my TC exposure for another 6 months. Good night.

Umpire 16 has no feel for the game whatsoever. His holding the ball calls Thursday and in last weeks JLT were terrible.

Kreuzer was one of our most dominant players when he went off and Kennedy was contributing well so let's not underestimate the impact of that. We'd be every chance to win if they'd stayed on.
I know Byrne made some offensive errors but his defensive game was good. He spent quite a bit of time on Bolton who didn't get a sniff.
Plowman comes in for plenty of criticism but he was very good again.

I thought we erred at selection. Playing Marchbank, Plowman, Jones and Weitering in the backline really hurt us.

Weitering started on the bench and I thought that meant he was going to play forward when Levi went into the ruck. Instead, he come on about half way through the first quarter and went into defence for the rest of the game.

There may have been a structural issue with our backline but I think a more fundamental problem was that Weitering simply had a bad game. A shocker, in fact. As in T-Bird at his worst, circa 2010.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s playing with an injury. That’s something some players handle well and others do not.
