Ha. I was in the staff room with him that Monday. Told him what a flower I thought he was. But he was actually a great guy and a lovely and intelligent man.

Not a confession but an observation relating to abuse at the footy.
I was sitting in the grandstand at Preston Oval last season watching Northern lose a game. There's a slight blonde headed bloke (I believe a member of the unofficial selection committee or whatever they call themselves) and he likes to hurl a bit of abuse at the players. He's at all of the VFL games and he likes to get into the players. (Hopefully he's not a poster on TC)
I was sitting with the Mother of one of our players and this guy was in full flight. Bagging the players and giving a general unfavourable commentary. The Mother asked him settle down and he didn't appreciate the suggestion. He seems harmless, but he can get quite personal.

Anyway, I was at the JLT game at PP earlier this season and he's sitting in the stats box holding what looks like an official position with the club. :lol:

That's one way to stop the abuse I suppose but not the option I'd prefer.

Similar story here, I was at the SCG when Carlton was being ritually slaughtered by the Swans yet again. I'd been giving it large all through the game with some good-humoured/self-effacing shouts and getting a few chuckles from the surrounding red-and-whites, but then I decided out of the blue to call Tony Lockett "ya fat cauliflower!" and lost all the good will. I felt mortified as soon as the words left my mouth and kept it shut the rest of the way. When I was a little kid listening to games on the radio I didn't always take losing very well. Once after we'd thrown away a game to Richmond I ran to my dad in tears and said "they" (Richmond? umpires?) were a bunch of cheats... based on compelling radio evidence of course. I think I also accused the Blues of deliberately trying to hurt me.

Once I was yelling abuse at Princes Park and Barb thought I was abusing her. Once I was reporting for Carlton VFL and I yelled at a certain player, only for his wife - sitting in front - to turn around and remonstrate with me.

As a 13 yo snotty-nosed kid living in Mildura (1980), I walked around the house impatiently. Impatience gave way to disbelief; denial; anger.....however, no bargaining or acceptance. The occasion? The 1980- 1st semi-final between Carlton and Collingwood. By halfway through the last quarter, I became inconsolable as the Pies took a stranglehold on the game. In desperation, I pleaded with my dad to kneel down with me to say a prayer for divine intervention, a miracle, anything to maintain our new found superiority over the dreaded black and whites. My father (a Collingwood supporter...in jest, I suspect) smiled and acquiesced to his now blabbering son's request........ 12 months later, my miracle arrived, in the shape of a shiny cup- the 1981 flag!!!!

Late 90's after a loss we bagged Lance Whitnall all the way home... it continued inside the pizza shop in Lalor where my cousin lived at the time. The owner that knew my cousin called him to the back of the shop which gained our attention. Upon his return he whispered the info that he received and the conversation changed to... Lance wasn't tooooooooo baaaaad... others were worse. Lance's old man was waiting for his take-away and heard everything we said... and to his credit, remained silent. Sorry Mr Whitnall

Last week against Richmond, Martin hit the post once... then twice. "No Dusty, you gotta kick the pill THROUGH the giant chopsticks... THROUGH THE CHOPSTICKS MARTIN". Bitchmond supporters unimpressed. PS: What is it with Richmond supporters sitting all around me in the Captains Club area. How the @#$%&! do they get in, and if they're borrowing tickets from our members that's just embarrasing.

Down at North Port last year he had a running verbal battle with an old female Port supporter ( who it turned out was also an old Pies supporter) whom he consistently addressed as Madame.
