Carlton plays its AFLX games on Friday 16th at Etihad.
It's a one off event: an exhibition. Not to be taken too serious.

I heard the Carlton boys trained last night and gave AFLX a go.
I wonder who tried out and which coaches were involved. Anyone know?

I attended a coaches clinic at Swans HQ yesterday and it was interesting to hear Stevie J, Rhys Shaw and John Blakey all agree AFLX has no similarity to the normal game. In fact, they said, not only does it not resemble the strategies and practises of a standard H&A game, it can lead to confusion, and as a result have left it to the players to work out who plays and to develop a game plan.

Swans Coaches are having nothing to do with it. In their opinion its disruptive, and only good for fitness given the speed of the game. They are not giving it the time of the day.

Furthermore, like the coaches, the older players haven't really taken an interest in the game at all, as it doesn't help out their planning for the season proper. The Swans no doubt will be represented by their kids.

Interesting. I'm coming to Melbourne to check it out. I need a fix.

Anyone have any thoughts or news about AFLX from a Carlton perspective?

I think Titus O'Reilly summed it up quite well....

Also, not sure what they are thinking with the ticket prices?Keep it cheap for members, Should use it as an opportunity to encourage membership and hype... ...

Meh....

It's a show designed to see if the AFL can garner interest in the overseas TV market because that is more important to them than ever having a stand alone team in Tasmania.
It should help us in the hybrid game as well.
As far as the 2018 season is concerned, the most import thing about AFLX is that is needs to be injury free and should be treated with the caution it deserves.
I will watch it because I need to get to know the new players and I can't help myself.

And when does this AFLX thing kick off? Assuming there are games before us on the 16th.

It's clever because it uses the soccer/hockey/NFL sized grounds, but I can see one glaring issue - 2 kicks and it's from one end to the other. Does anyone know if it's the same size footy? I reckon a 3/4 size would be better in that it won't go as far........or put lead in it.

Probably more suited to the women's game I would think. Just a thought.

Squads for Thursday's games have been posted; I'm assuming our squad will be posted tomorrow.

Carlton supporters will have their first chance to see the future on show on Friday night, when youngsters Paddy Dow and Lochie O’Brien run out onto Etihad Stadium for the first time in navy blue.

Named in Carlton’s inaugural AFLX squad, the 2017 draftees will be joined by fellow recruits Matthew Kennedy, Cam O’Shea and Matthew Lobbe for the Club’s matches against Melbourne and North Melbourne.

The Blues will enter the competition full of run, with speedsters David Cuningham, Tom Williamson, Jarrod Pickett and Kym LeBois named in the squad. Carlton’s young talls will also be on display, with Jack Silvagni, Caleb Marchbank and Harrison Macreadie all picked to take part in the new, shorter-form game.
