Quote:
MARC Murphy will become one of the longest-serving consecutive captains of the Carlton Football Club, after being unanimously endorsed by his peers to lead the Blues for a sixth straight year in 2018.

Having been appointed captain in 2013, the 30-year-old sits behind only Stephen Kernahan, John Nicholls, Ken Hands and Ern Henfry as the Blues’ longest-serving captain across consecutive years.

After three years serving as Murphy’s deputy, beloved veteran Kade Simpson will hand over the reins as part of the Club’s leadership program succession plan, with Sam Docherty and Patrick Cripps assuming joint vice-captaincy roles.

The 33-year-old defender will remain in the Blues’ leadership group, alongside midfielder Ed Curnow, who joined the group in Bolton’s first year as senior coach in 2016.

In a bolstered eight-man group, experienced duo Matthew Kreuzer and Alex Silvagni, as well as rising defender Lachie Plowman round out the Blues’ on-field leadership group for 2018 after being recognised by their peers on Wednesday.

2018 CARLTON LEADERSHIP GROUP:
Marc Murphy – Captain
Sam Docherty – Joint Vice-Captain
Patrick Cripps – Joint Vice-Captain
Kade Simpson
Ed Curnow
Matthew Kreuzer
Alex Silvagni
Lachie Plowman

Good group.

I'd prefer Doc as captain but now that he's injured this will do for this year.

I agree.

I also think big kudos to Alex Silvagni. Hasnt been with the club long and into the leadership group now. Obviously doing a lot with the other players and quickly being looked up to.

Same can be said for Plowman - both are good inclusions I feel

Cripps should be captain. Murph is no on-field leader. Bad call.

The Hun’s headline: “Seven gamer joins Blues leaders”

Nah, not trolling at all...

I agree. Very impressive performance. Would suggest he's probably likely to be far closer to our best team than most of us had realised.

They just dredged up the “No gamer joins Blues Leaders”, when Bryce Gibbs was appointed to the leadership group by Pagan in 2007.

I think it's great that Plowman has been included. A very good sign for the future.

ASOS clearly won't be there for too long, but still impressive that he's made an impact worthy of inclusion.

If we are playing to win a game rather than developing players, I'd have him in my first 18 playing in the backline against the No 1 Forward.

I'm not so sure.

I can see it's easy to come to that conclusion from the our side of the fence, but I think Murph has an effect greater than is first apparent.

Either way, if it's Cripps or Doc who replaces him longer term, we have a solid future ahead on that from.

FWIW I'd go for Doc as next captain.

Cornes played 300 games... how many of those were spent as a part of the PAFC leadership group?

Kane Cornes.
That's why Bolton is a 3 time premiership assistant coach, an AFL head coach, and a highly considered teacher.... and Kane Cornes is a backup on SEN and a Sunday channel nine crap comedy show commentator.

K Cornes drives me round the bend and he always seems so anti Carlton. During the draft it is hilarious to hear his comments on what Carlton should be doing/giving up etc. His comments are usually without a lot of analysis and I won't be listening to his show on SEN. He gives me a headache.

Having said that ... I have always thought leadership groups were a bit over the top. A captain and a vice-captain makes sense. Older players by default should be helping younger players. Anyway I don't think its a big deal either way.

Go Bluebaggers!

I agree. He may not be the perfect onfield warrior, matchwinner captain, we'd all like. But he won the b&f last year. And he's been the unanimous choice of coaching staff and playing group over the last 3 years. Can't help feeling they might be in a reasonably good position to know.

I agree with Cornes that a Captain and Vice Captain is all that's needed. An 8 man 'leadership group' is ridiculous.

Post subject:  Re: 2018 Leadership Group

not many of these commentators have made the consideration that there are so many different groups in a footy club
we have included a wide range in the group and hopefully everyone on the playing list gets involved and also has input and support
it may be a bit over the top but hopefully the whole playing group can feel comfortable, associate and connect with a member of the leadership group so issues aren’t hidden or resentment of any kind doesn’t grow out of control and becomes untenable
if it works it could be a wide-ranging and strengthen our playing group for now and the future
bb has said he want everyone involve and like the musketeers, well not exactly those words

Crows had six last year.

Richmond two.

Nothing rules players out from being unofficial leaders.

We’ve potentially chosen a larger group due to Carlton having a young list that needs guidance and role models.

Right, that settles it then. Kane Cornes and Rexy think Leadership Groups are overrated. Never mind what the world's foremost experts in Leadership say.

Because a team once won a flag with only a captain and a vc.
