CARLTON is mourning the loss of former premiership player, captain and coach Ken Hands, who passed away on Friday.

The Blues great, who was the last surviving member of their 1945 and 1947 premiership teams, was 91.

Saw Ken play when I was a kid. Was a wonderful player and a great captain

Used to see him in his later years around East Brighton and he was a gentleman

R.I.P.

I had a similar jumper as a kid, a sewn on CFC. Those were the days.

I've still got my old wool jumper like Ken's wearing packed away, it's got No1 (Ken's number) on it. It was given to me by my Carlton mad uncle in around 54-55 when I would have been 3 or 4yo. Ah, where do the years go?

I just went and dug the old jumper out to have a look at it and almost shed a tear. Pure wool, made in Australia says the tag. The number is gone, (I'd forgotten that) but you can still see the outline of the number where the colour is darker.

Was reading an old book by Ken Piesse today, and he had a quote from Ken Hands on one of the pages.

"I started off being a ball player, but I learnt the hard way. You're not human sometimes if you don't hit back."

I'm glad Ken hit back.
