Weak decision to hold on to Daisy.

I hoped the club would move on from the Daisy and Murphy era of leadership but it seems they'll be hovering over the young guys for another year.

Disagree.
Do we need mature bodies and role models or not?
Or are we only interested if it’s Luke Hodge?
We’ve basically got Simpson, Murphy, Daisy and Ed. And Kreuzer when he gets on the park.
With Docherty & Cripps that makes 7/40 who are mature bodies with the ability/experience/smarts to provide on/off field direction to all the young’ns.
And Daisy has been pulling his weight.

Yes, we will be a stronger team when he is replaced but only if someone is pushing him out which has not so far been the case.

Yeah I'm torn on this one, for every good thing he does he usually does something equally bad if not worse, when he gets it wrong he really gets it wrong.
Also played in the easiest role on the ground most of the year and was by and large ineffective.

Agree.

Thomas doesn't have to be selected in first 22 to have a great influence expediting the kids development. The more wise heads who are keen on passing on experience at the highest level, the better.

We have a well known severe shortage of 23-27yo and an obvious shortage of respected wise heads, let alone Premiership players (Thomas): which was once the norm at Carlton post 1967 right up to Ratten's retirement.

I don't agree Rexy - from what you hear Daisy is very good with the young players and that's one of the reasons he has been retained

Some good and bad form from him this year arguably more good than bad

Would be good next year if he wasn't permanent fixture in the side agree with that but cant see that happening unless a few step up and ply good footy and we get a decent run with injuries

... and we're paying him minimum!

I thought he played well this year and had his best year in navy blue. I am not surprised he got another year. But i agree we will be making progress when he is no longer a regular.

This.
As usual, Bondi has nailed it.
He will play when he deserves it, when he is needed and as depth. If he plays more than about eight games we are going nowhere or are in the middle of an other injury crisis.
Next year Doc, Williamson, McReadie, Byrne, Cunningham maybe Jack should fill the four small back positions, which begs the question yet again, where will McGovern play of we get him.
Thomas's development role goes on whether he actually plays or not.

Not McReadie. He's around 6 ft 5 in, hardly a small.

Well, I am sure I heard Mason Cox describing him as small but I may have been wrong.

Silvagni, Polson, Plowman, Pickett and on this years' form, a few others too. I agree we shouldn't be in a position where we need him, but we do  .

Happy to keep him another year on minimum coin.
Watch the video of when DeKoning is told he's playing his first game. Look at the interaction between Daisy and TDK.
I wasn't a fan when he came but I reckon he has absolutely embraced his new club (and that speaks volumes for me)

The 666 rule and the extended goal square are designed to give mids and runners more time and space.
It will affect the players every club drafts and trades for.
We have light mids except for Cripps and Kennedy. Players like fisher, SPS, Dow, O'Brien and Walsh/Rankine (if we pick one) should benefit. Clubs who like the slog will need to change their style, which is probably why the coaches are mostly against it. They've built a list to combat stoppage footy. I think it's also a reason Richmond is so far in front, they built a list to run riot.
I am thinking we might benefit more than most clubs if we can get the best out of Cunningham, Pickett and Garlett. The others I mentioned above are pretty regular in the team whereas they are in and out.

We also need someone who can barrel the footy from the 18 yard square past the middle. The current ploy of kicking it into the pocket to an outrider has been snookered. It will be so much easier to clear the defensive fifty now. Kick it fast and long to any of Curnow, Kreuzer, De Konig or Harry like in the olden days.

If there is going to be a downside to the 18 metre square, it might be that teams will flood back to the centre line or even into the defensive 50 after a behind and mount a counter attack from there. Important to move it quickly. Run and stun. Accurate long kicking. Bring on Williamson.
WOOF!

I was waiting for someone's 'take' on the potential new rules.

I think you're onto something BlueSomb.

If they lessen number of interchanges players like OBrien and Cripps are going to dominate

So, let's say we don't get a priority pick.

How are we going to land Shiel, McGovern and Setterfield with the following picks ?

2018 - Pick 1, 2 x 2nd round, 4th round
2019 - 1st round, 2nd round, 3rd round, 4th round.
