It was discussed during the season that the only reason Rowe wasn't dropped weeks earlier was they wanted to get him to 100. He had some stinkers for a few weeks and survived. Either they decided "well stuff you, you don't deserve it", or assumed he'd get another year and weren't so concerned.

The Dean Rioli precedent is certainly there (although yet to provide results). Shit, we still talk enough about Deledio and Lloyd. Rowe getting a game in a side where it wouldn't have been too impractical to auction off a spot to someone in the crowd doesn't seem too out of place.

Obviously the quick fix is back and the rebuild is over
Personally I don’t like it but we can judge it in a few years time

McGovern is basically got for two picks in the 20 s in a strong draft year
Setterfield is yet another GWS ex player

To me it’s a sign of panic given the sides pathetic efforts this year
If Cripps had been injured the year would have probably been winless

Still plenty of deadwood on the list despite around a dozen goings

Interesting times ahead

Holding on to pick 1 (when it would have got us Shiel) is panic?
Picking up a kid rated in the top 2 a few years ago, but who has been set back with injury, is panic?
Paying slightly overs for an exciting forward prospect (McGovern) with years still left in him is panic?
Drafting a proven medium sized forward as depth (Fasolo) for basically nothing, is panic?
Picking up a senior back flanker (Newman) who went from Rookie to regular at Sydney, to cover loss of Byrne, is panic?

Are you really a CFC supporter? What would you have rather done? Quality costs.

On Settlefield
Just because he was touted as one of the best kids in the draft
doesn’t mean he is going to be a guaranteed star
Look at Pickett
Plowman was a high draft pick but seems to be a third tall
defender who provides little drive out of defence
He also is an average kick
Marchbank was a pick 6 but he doesn’t play up to a standard of that nature
Poor decision maker and another player who is an average kick
Setterfield has cost us 2 picks including going very skinny in the 2019 draft

McGovern
As you pointed out we payed overs for him something we have been doing for the past
two decades . His highlights package looks amazing but Nick Graham’s would have looked ok as well if he had one
We desperately need inside and outside mids yet we give up 2 picks in the draft in the 20 s
C Curnow should play midfield next year with the Govs arrival but
I would have personally gone for 2 midfielders with the hope of one turning out to be gun
Look at Zac Fisher
To me this deal smacks of the old Carlton
Mc Govern could be a star
He better be for what we potentially gave up to get him

Fasolo
One year is a blessing
Three years would be lunacy
There is a reason he couldn’t get a game at the Pies
despite all their injuries
He doesn’t chase tackle
Does a couple of fancy things during a match and that’s it
He’s not good enough
Just like Mullett, O’Shea, Lang etc
So why do we persist in recruiting duds when there known to be duds already

Newman
The only trade I agree with
Anyway see how we go 2019

So don't pin your hopes on guys that were drafted early as there's no guarantee, yet that should be our planned 'hope'? Ok.

You provide the answer to your own query with C. Curnow being able to move further up the field now that we have McGovern. Docherty will also be more of a regular in the middle with Newman and the return of Williamson on the HB line. You'd imagine we'll draft another midfielder at #1 to add to Setterfield. Fasolo is basically a freebie to replace Wright. Shouldn't get a game if Pickett is switched on.

I'm all for a decent critique but this is just talking shit.

way too glass-half-empty keogh

re Setterfield - on your logic we'd never bother with the draft

re McG - he's only 23yo, has elite raw talent as seen in the vids, just coming into his prime

re Faz - has AFL level talent, got him for naught

you can't accuse SOS of being a conservative list manager - he's been hyper aggressive

Another benefit of a “super draft” is that other teams will fall over themselves to get more picks, and while I’d have liked us to somehow stay in the 2nd round, the club’s direction is now clear.

I’m thinking that for the most part, the club thinks they have enough kids, Walsh the obvious exception, and enough mid/late-20s battlers (Fasolo and Newman are essentially replacements/upgrades on Wright and Byrne).

It’s now about the kids playing together consistently, augmented only with quality “older” players.

Agree 100%, we need to make sure we nail that other part of the equation in landing some quality older players in the next two off seasons and back our coaching, development and fitness of our young talent.

Fingers crossed it all comes together. We need some joy in our footy lives.

I am not a big rap in getting one player for potentially 2 good ones

Not just us other clubs as well

Fasolo is a freebie
He still clogs up the list
For finishing last he get one pick in the first 68 or so picks
A draft which everyday has talked about as the super draft

As I said whether the club has made the right decisions or not
Will be revealed in a few years time

Call me the prophet of doom but some of the sugar coasters
who have been on this site as long as me would have egg on their face
When it comes to things they have posted over the years

The Judd deal
Who won on that one
Clearly this years premiers

The Mc Govern deal is of the same ilk
And he hasn’t really proven himself yet

By this measure. If we win a premiership in the next 10 years... we win the mcgovern trade!

Of course you are absolutely correct, Setterfield would want to be better than those second round guys like McHenry, Duursma, Butters, Jones, Valente, Taylor.
That is a very fair comparison to make in 4 years time. If he is on par; well and good. If he hasn't made an impact, doesn't bode well for our recruiters.
He and McGovern would want to be good because this second round is the best for some time and we could have had three bites at it.

Do you mean two bites?

How you get panic from what the Blues did in the last week is beyond me.

List looks good.

We can move forward with MLG, Liddle, Bolton, SOS, Lloyd and Russell...its a new regime with no similarities to the past.

No doubt Blues have turned a new leaf.

Only problem I see is too many kids for finals in 2019, but the benefit is we can focus on tempting the right age group next year, and the kids are all quality.

Pressure for spots when everyone returns fit and healthy after a HUGE preseason: something a dozen or so missed out on last year, let alone the injuriy debacle we suffered.

Go Buebaggers

What's this group of players called?

RR: Cripps
R: Dow
W: Walsh
W: Fisher
HHF: Setterfield
HHF: SPS

Is that a midfield dynasty we have before us?

Ed, Murphy, Simpson, Thomas are a luxury to support that group. Docherty was earmarked for midfield before Gibbs was traded.

Still have to find a spot for first rounders OBrien, Pickett, Cuningham, Garlett, Lang. Then there's Williamson and Silvagni.

Where would Shiel fit? He'd just be taking up a list spot for 4-5 years. Cognilio and Kelly are different stories. Always room for that calibre.

Pressure on midfield spots from quality kids and experienced players. List is in a good place imo. The only way is up.

oops...I forgot about the big bodied Kennedy. Newman if needed, and then there's Hickmott, Polson and Schmacher to consider.

We have the personnel. SOS done well.

Midfield FA next year
Stephen Hill
David Swallow
Stephen Coniglio
Liam Shiels
Nathan Jones
Jarryn Geary
Jack Newnes

One clear standout there. Everyone will be chasing Coniglio. Shiels would be a reasonable get. Haven’t seen Hill play for a while so don’t know where he is at. Swallow, Geary and Newnes wouldn’t add much to what we have. Jones wouldn’t be going anywhere.

Kennedy and Tomlinson also FA next year...
