Yep and Hawthorn never set up their dynasty by getting Roughead and Franklin

Yes teams like hawthorn kick you in the balls whilst we box clever keeping to the Marquis of
Queens bury rules
No wonder we are coming from so far behind
Let's be pure and stay near the bottom of the ladder

We have drafted more talent in the last few years than Hawthorn did.

We are set up if we can get our culture and development right, like they did.

“Show me the incentive and I’ll show you the outcome,” is my favourite Charlie Munger quote.

It held true in the AFL for years when a priority pick was awarded to a team that won five games or less in a year, and still held when the rule was changed in 2006 to include results from the previous season. In hindsight, the incentive proved too much for many teams to resist. Tanking emerged, even though we couldn’t call it that!

In 2012, the rule was refined so that a priority pick could still be awarded, guided by criteria to analyse eligibility, but essentially at the call of the AFL Commission.

Agree with that Rexy and am very supportive of our approach but why look a gift horse in the mouth ask the AFL all they can say is no

All I can say is that others have benefitted in various ways with the Afl largesse whether it be cola hello swans priority pick hello Hawthorn 9 home games at chattery hello Geelong why are we being pure be damned take it and run

Paul Roos would agree with the culture v draft picks comments. Heard him at a corporate event before he coached Melbourne and he made a thinly veiled swipe at Carlton and draft pick culture.

Glad we’re finally addressing it.

“The new method, whereby the AFL commission uses its discretion to award a pick, is open to biases and back-room deal-making between the AFL and embattled clubs.”

“Many teams gained huge benefits from the priority pick allocation in its previous incarnation. The Hawthorn bounty of Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead stands out as arguably the greatest draft coup in history.”

Cain Liddle “ We got ourselves into this mess we’ll get ourselves out of it.”

Put in plain English what he is saying is
1-he supports Brisbane getting a priority pick
2-he supports AFL intervention in the running of bne
3-he supports Carlton paying an equalisation tax to help other clubs
4-he supports the leg up Hawthorn get via Tasmania

In other words, he is willing to just go thru the motions and be used by the AFL.
This guy Liddle should support the AFL taking over management of Carlton. If it is good enough for BNE to get all the AFL goodies it is good enough for Carlton. Fact is pride of Carlton being a “big club” will stop it. Liddle is out of his depth.

Yes of course Hawthorn did they are ruthless we sit here pure and say we won't go for it even if we desperately need it with our luck we would get livo but it also could be a buddy

Do you reckon bloody Clarkson who has clandestine meetings with the AFL CEO to whinge about rules affecting his team wouldn't ask for a priority pick in our situation
Do you reckon Kennett in our situation wouldn't be bludgeoning the AFL on it

In other words, he is willing to just go thru the motions and be used by the AFL to assist other clubs. Why isn’t he campaigning to get money back from AFL for all those years of paying an “equalisation tax”. Carlton is used by the AFL due to its latent support for everything including the draft.

This guy Liddle should support the AFL taking over management of Carlton. If it is good enough for BNE to get all the AFL goodies it is good enough for Carlton. Fact is pride of Carlton being a “big club” will stop it. Liddle is out of his depth.

Caroline Wilson in a couple of sentences has the gall to state Brisbane deserves the priority pick “despite poor management.” But Carlton doesn’t as a result of “poor management.”

That’s the thing, the AFL is run by people like Caro who have one rule for expansion clubs and another for established clubs...it is run like an old boys mayes club. CFC easy to take advantage of.

It looks like we are after De Goey by the amount of positive praise Judd heaped on last night.

Hawthorn would be demanding a PP and the AFL media would be backing them 100%

yes of course Brisbane should get one and will play the game -imagine Leigh Matthews sitting there around board table saying we need one but we aint going to apply for it - meanwhile our Nuffies sit around the board table and recognize we need one but say nah we wont ask for one - what are they doing -

Agree with all you and Tap have said on this issue Frank. WTF did he say anything at all? If asked, all that is required is to say is that a pick is not on our radar at the moment - we’re about winning as many games as we can ... etc. I’m sure Geelong never felt the need to apologise for all the F/S picks they received leading up to their 3 flags.

Ironically I just wrote a thread last night highlighting that our plight over the past decade is no more or less our fault than any other club down the bottom of the ladder. The salary cap issue was a long time ago and nothing to do with the people at the club now. It’s like we carry around our own football version of “white guilt”.

Talk about shooting ourselves in the foot. Just dumb not asking for PP.

We could well use it as part of our bid for O Wines.

Afl article from Barrett is interesting.
Imagine if we could land pick 2 for Murphy....
Pick 1 best available kid.
Pick 2 Dylan Shield or best available kid.
Must sign up crippa and charlie long term.
Chase Gaff and Dalahuse/Wallis.
Second round picks from Adelaide and Dogs, best young kids.
Ben S and Hickmont as FS.
Maybe look at Dom Tyson from the dees, 4/5 rounder.

Melbourne got the extra pick following Frawley's departure (who was 26 when he left). Murphy will be 31.
