Glenn McFarlane wrote:
A CASHED-UP Carlton will chase a blue-chip midfielder as it enters this year’s free agency market confident its strategic rebuild remains on course, despite a winless start to 2018.

While the Blues have been extremely disappointed with their 0-4 start, the club’s general manager of football Andrew McKay has urged fans to remain patient ahead of Saturday’s clash with West Coast at the MCG.

McKay said the club won’t deviate from a plan set in place after coach Brendon Bolton’s appointment in late 2015, saying cutting corners would hurt the Blues in the long-run.

That involves a concerted push to seek the most suitable midfield free agent in October in an effort to fill a mid-20s void on the club’s playing list, and to help support stars such as Marc Murphy and Patrick Cripps.

“We are certainly in the free agency market,” McKay told the Herald Sun. “It has been about the timing of when to decide to seek a free agent ... we think the timing is pretty good now.

who's available ?

Who wants to come to Carlton is more to the point.

Lucky you’re not in charge of our “come to Carlton” presentation

Gee what a great surprise given we chased rockcliff hard last pre-season and we have a dearth of midfielders and particularly midfielders not a revelation
Disappointingly the only positive articles for us are about the next exchange period and not this season

Depends how hard we go at it this year... but I would have thought there are better FA targets for us next year.
If we can get Gaff relatively cheap, fine. But I’d rather go to the draft again this year and then target a FA next year.

We'll chase a gun YOUNG midfielder in in the next couple of years.

Rockcliff would not have had the kitchen sink thrown at him, the gun kid will.

We'll also keep picking up medium age freebies (think Wright, Kerridge)... And if you win a few of those, it's a bonus.

Still have a couple of years before it gets serious

Why would gaff come to us unless we offered crazy money?

Our best bet is to go to the draft, and target younger players who aren’t getting opportunities at better sides (like Kennedy).

I wouldn’t bother with lynch either as our outlay would be too much and be an albatross for us with such a big contract to contend with

Shiel next year.

Keep on our current course, show good promise next year and Shiel is someone I’d want to pay big coin for. A leader, stands up at big moments, exactly the kind of player top sides are built around

Dalhaus would be a good pickup. We lack a flanker who picks up 20-30 possessions each week and 30-40 goals a year.

gaff isn't the mid we need. he's taken a long time to shed his bruise-free kane lucas style of footy.

the fear would be to play him the big dollars and watch him revert back into that player bruise free player he was. cfc is the perfect environment for bruise free. our captain leads by example.

Would be brilliant to get Shiel.... That would be hard unless the ' go home ' factor pops up.

Forget Tom Lynch too....

Most likely a young mid being a third string.. Especially in an ageing team... If you're 25, being paid small coin while the ageing veterans have all the top dollars stitched up, you are ripe for the temptation....

Who that will be is for us to speculate (and for the Blues to sound out).

The thing with Shiel is that he, and his family, are apparently all massive Carlton people.

Granted, it's not far from "he supported us as a kid" but it's a start at least.
