Add Gaff, Docherty, our first round pick, more development/another preseason to our young blokes, more synergy and hopefully being less cursed by injury and you would expect us to be much more competitive next year.

Re our rebuilding drafts of '15 '16 '17 so far it's already looking good in my opinion.

Definite hits - Curnow Fisher Williamson Dow

Some good signs - McKay Weitering Cuningham Silvagni SPS Macreadie LOB

Yet to emerge - Polson Kerr Schumacher DeKoning Garlett

Definite busts - none yet

Agree, although not sure I'd be calling Dow a definite hit yet. There are a few more in the some good signs group that we would have said were definite hits previously (Weitering, Cuningham, SPS.. maybe Silvagni) but have struggled for form. Confident they'll pretty much all make it and be long term players though.

Got high hopes for Schumacher and TDK as well

I reckon we have nailed the draft in the last 3 yrs and would be more than happy with us targeting free agents and using our draft picks to trade in readu made players. Eg: Shiel,Kelly (2020)

Yes,he was injured in a marking contest.

Going by how Darling went on the weekend that hip injury didn't appear too bad after all.

Based on --- really annoying, agro, goal kicking little PITA -- Haydn Ballantine for the other flank with Jed Lamb. Drive oppo flankers and supporters crackers. Anyone who annoys me as much as he does has to be pretty good.

I reckon the time for this is when we're hovering around the top four and just need something extra to take us all the way. 'Till then I'd prefer we kept building through the draft.

I agree. This year might be a bit soon.

Not sure they are necessarily mutually exclusive - can do both - free agency just requires cash which it is said that we have a war chest - not draft picks and then we simply use early draft picks to load up again on youth

prefer dual strategy given dearth of good 25 years old to 30 years old -a couple of exceptions - our young on -ballers would benefit greatly with a couple more strong mature on ballers

Andrew Gaff is still only 25 years old, if we could snap him up a free agent I'd take him in a heart beat. He's still got plenty of good football ahead of him and is quality.

If Murph goes as FA, that would affect what compo we get. If Murph compo was a pick after our 2nd rounder, currently 20, is Gaff worth that in a strong draft?

Would be a terrific addition for us without having to trade anything. Even as early as next year a midfield of Kreuzer, Cripps, Murphy, Curnow, Gaff, Fisher, Dow, SPS, O'Brien and Kerridge plus whoever we draft is looking mighty fine.
