This writer from The Age seems to be on the same track as me in regards to how cellar dwellers stay cellar dwellers for many years.

He refers to those clubs as "rebuilders" vs "renovators". I refer to them as Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 clubs. The Tier 1 and Tier 3 clubs rarely change.

The sheer fact is that Hawthorn can afford to be arrogant about it all. This is a quote below from Clarkson. They never have to rebuild as they are in a position of strength and never need to drop down to rebuild. Either does Geelong or Sydney.

The system needs alteration...that is unless everyone thinks that Hawthorn's 35 million pay day via Tasmania is "equitable" whilst Carlton pays an "equalisation tax" to help other clubs above it on the ladder.

Clarkson said -
"For some clubs, grand final day is towards the end of November and that's because they've got all those high draft picks, but that's never been our go." - Alastair Clarkson, April 2, 2018.
Exactly...the system is there for Hawthorn to use. For Carlton supporters, the big day is draft day...rinse and repeat. It ain't gonna change anything for quite a few years.

Well said Alastair. You've never needed low draft picks like Hodge (pick 1), Lewis (pick 7), Roughead (pick 2), Franklin (pick 5), Birchill (pick 14), or Rioli (pick 12).

Not to mention rorting the free agency system allowing you to get AA players at bargain basement prices from bottom sides in return for the promise for the player of premiership medallions...

I know what you're saying, but we've had 15 years of high picks and chances to build a quality team around a strong culture.

For some reason, we haven't been able to achieve that. Even when we weren't officially 're-building', we still kept our top picks - but wasted them. When Clarkson took over the dawks, they were a rabble. They built their list and a mental strength that we can only dream of.

I know that's what Bolts is trying to do now, but Murphy is no Hodge - and we need a Hodge. Sometimes you think someone is a quality leader, but you're not 100% sure because you haven't seen that one thing that sets them aside from the rest - well, I saw it on Saturday night.

Cripps is our man.

Plus the 4 1st round picks they used on Dowler, Thorp and trading for Burgoyne.

I'm a massive fan of how they done it, but he's kidding himself if he thinks that it didn't involve bottoming out and loading up on picks.

Also this "reinvention" they've had over the last 12 months is still based on the fact that last week they still had 10 guys who have played 150+ games and even that couldn't help them yesterday against the Tier 3 Kangaroos.

Depends how hard we go at it this year... but I would have thought there are better FA targets for us next year.
If we can get Gaff relatively cheap, fine. But I’d rather go to the draft again this year and then target a FA next year.

Why would gaff come to us unless we offered crazy money?

Our best bet is to go to the draft, and target younger players who aren’t getting opportunities at better sides (like Kennedy).

I wouldn’t bother with lynch either as our outlay would be too much and be an albatross for us with such a big contract to contend with

I agree 100%

Agree, Clarkson wanting to cotribute to the Concussion debate is disrespectful and an insult to our intelligence.
He should be ashamed of hinself someone remind the idiot of his momentary lapse.

Brad Scott is on On the Couch right now.
He was asked about Waite and Scott Thompson.
He said having those two players at either end of the ground has helped in the development of the younger players.
Maybe we have erred slightly in letting too many senior players go at the expense of player development.

Injuries haven't helped. Having Doherty, Kreuzer and Murphy on top of others would have been enough. I'd say you could argue Rowe and Casboult did the same job for us on Saturday.

As for "developing the young players", last week against us they only had 3 players under the age of 22 and none of them key position players so they've had very little to do.

Well done to them for so far exceeding outside expectations, but to me it looks like another mid table finish with an old side leaving them no closer to a flag as ever.

If that is Carlton, our incompetent medical staff should be sacked, hired then sacked again.

Bit harsh to include McKay on the list of talls for whom overs were paid. Give him a few years.

After we picked up O'Shea from our VFL team last year I wonder whether the NB's picking up three forward pockets in Hill, Fisher and Palmer is an audition for a spot on our list. Looks like Palmer was pretty good today.
