THEY loomed as ‘dead rubber’ games, but now there could be much more interest in several matches involving teams in the bottom half of the AFL ladder.

And Carlton could feature in most of them.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan on Wednesday revealed the league was seriously considering trialling potential rule changes in games for premiership points over the remaining rounds of this season.

They will probably also trial the draft lotto system this year so the bottom 8 get random picks rather than in order of ladder position.

That'll learn us for tanking.

...Or 'gift' Carlton the number 1 pick in next years' mid-season draft.

Try it on Essendon*, they're used to experimental programs.

Don't think we will like the interchange cap with the little notice they have given and our long injury list/young list.
Don't think we should agree to that rule change at this time of the year. The others I'm happy with

Great idea. Our remaining games hold little interest to me apart from watching kids develop. This creates extra interest. It also gives our remaining few games a bit of purpose. Bring it on.

How can a so called professional sport trial rules mid season, mid round, when points are up for grab albeit the teams competing won't be playing in finals. The AFL are calling them 'dead rubber games', yet if a club decided to manage their list or play around with their game plan, they would be accused of tanking even though they are so called 'dead rubbers'. The AFL has no integrity and is proving themselves to be a mickey mouse competition.

Are you happy with the spectacle as it is Blue Boys?

Are you talking about watching us or other teams play? Watching us is obviously painful viewing. I don't share the same views about the state of the game as those in the media portray, I think there's a lot of hysteria about it at the moment and I don't think we need drastic rule changes.

I've seen too many games where there is a total of less than 10 goals between 2 teams at half time. The game has become too compressed and defensive. IMHO, the coaches are destroying the spectacle.
I'm a huge footy fan but this year I've turned over numerous games to watch the NRL or just turned it off. The game is becoming almost unwatchable IMHO.
I'm all for change.

You're right again bv, maybe our coach can implement a more attacking game plan.
Our games have become a bit drab.

There are some simple solutions to the congestion issues

- Ping the throws/illegal disposals, even if there is limited prior opportunity.
- Don't wait 8 hours before whistling for a ball up - waiting so long allows more players to get closer to the contest. There are many instances where it is obvious the ball won't come out yet the umpire allows play to continue (allowing more players to get to the contest).
- Throw the ball up/throw it in faster.

The standard of umpiring is still diabolical - the focus has to be on quality decision makers - not on whether an umpire can bounce the ball.

The AFL need to abolish the bounce ASAP - not only lengthening umpiring careers (by reducing the stress on their bodies) but also increasing the number of umpires eligible to be selected.

There would be many umpires who are excellent decision makers but can't be utilised at AFL level because they can't bounce the ball.

This is just so stupid it can't happen.

Players and coach have their careers on the line as it is, now they need to adapt to an experiment because our season is now irrelevant to the AFL.

How about showing us some respect.
