Oh well one part of the team where we actually have some depth and with Matt Shaw/ Oshea. Not as bad as it could be.

There’s never a good time for an ACL, but the start of preseason is probably as good as it gets. At least it gives us all preseason to plan around his absence and, all going well, he will have a full preseason leading into 2019.

O’Shea is more Simon White than Sam Docherty, IMO.

Big call to go traditional - Im sure they would have thought long and hard around a LARS and getting him back a lot earlier.

Im gutted. Was looking forward to him playing a lot through the middle this year and seeing what that added to our intent.

Get well soon Doc - we will miss ya

Absolutely crap news but sfa we can do about it.
Williamson and McReadie will have to step up. We also have other options as the back line was our least worrying zone.
The midfield will be the place where we need someone as well. I thought he might spend more time there this season.
Simmo come on down. You'll have a big year this year.
Doc is one player on a list of many.
Get well soon and we will see you back in time for the next golden era.

I think it’s his on field leadership as much as anything that we will miss. He had become something of a General down back.

I thought 2018 might be the year that we see Simmo phased into a support role within the squad, but I think he has just become a key player for us again.

With Plowman and Weitering I believe we are strong with leadership down back, to the point Simmo is chosen on merit. I can’t see Simmo slumping in form to badly anyway.

Who else is out next season? I've lost track.

Gibbs

Oh well yeah, obviously I knew about that. OK, I can breathe easy again. Thought you were going to tell me Crippa had a setback or something...

What sucks even more about our annual "preseason surprise" is that they're often players whose loss makes us drop our bundle.

While other teams have managed to go on strong without key players for long stretches, we've always capitulated.

It would also be nice to have all our leaders out there for the year. First it’s Kreuz and Murph in 2016, Cripps this year, and now THIS. No @#$%&! wonder we have a leadership vacuum, we can never get them all on the park.

Hopefully this group now has what it takes to overcome these setbacks. Otherwise we remain well and truly [REDACTED].

Yep, the good teams seem to be able to press on regardless of who gets injured (Bulldogs 2016 for example). It would be nice if that were us for a change, but I don't see that happening.

That's the point - we are not a good team and haven't been for many, many years. I don't see that changing much next year.

I am surprised that no-one as blamed the AFL for Docherty's injury.

If he was in the International Rules side as he should have been, would not have been training at PP.

As usual a conspiracy by the AFL.

Well they are probably funding the turf replacement on main ground, so yes, we can blame them :-)

He’s 24, there would have been somewhere between 0 and 0 thought about whether to get LARS.

Considering our trade and draft period I reckon this guy would have struggled to get a game next year so no great loss.
