Sitting outside the MCG after our great win against our arch enemy Collingwood and who do I see walking towards me? Our team of the century captain Stephen Sticks Kernahan, I stopped him to shake his hand and he introduced me to his wife.

As my father and I worked as statisticians during his playing day - I asked Stephen if he knew my father Peter Tuomy and to my family's honour, Sticks said he remembered my father, who is now based over as my grandmother was Judiac, and Sticks described my father as a 'distinguished gentleman'.

What a more meaningful meeting could one have?

Thanks Stephen Kernahan.

Sounds like a nice guy. And what a footballer!!

Easily our third best captain, our second best CHF, and our third best FF.

Shit president but.

I served Sticks at the races once years ago, had to tell the great man it was a Tooheys venue and no Crownies unfortunately.

It would have been in the mid 90's and we were playing a game at Prince's Park. The second quarter was about to begin and Sticks was injured that day so he spent the afternoon in the coaches box. He was running towards the box to make it in time before the quarter started so I decided to stop him just outside the back of the box where the doors were (I would have been 12 or 13 years old) and ask for an autograph.

He had every right to ignore me and continue on to get to his box on time but he stopped, asked me what my name was, who my favourite player was and signed my jumper. I also remember hearing Parkin barking at him from inside the box and Sticks just smiled and said that was his cue.

I also have a nice story about meeting SOS but I will wait till the Meeting SOS thread comes out!

FWIW, I think he was clearly our best CHF.
Ok, I'll bite:

Best Captains? (Case could be made for all of these - Sticks wins out on longevity but the others had their strong points)
1) Nicholls?
2) Fitzpatrick, Barrassi?
3) Sticks?

Best CHFs? (Sticks clearly best CHF IMO)
1) ?
2) Sticks
Walls?

Best FFs? (Pretty strong case for Sticks as best FF...)
1) Jezza? (Averaged ~2goals per game and played most of his career in other positions but the only one of the three to kick 100 goals...)
2) Fev? (Avg ~3/game exclusively at full forward - except for one game at full back under Pagan...)
3) Sticks? (Avg almost 3/game, played most of his career as a CHF and 11 times our no.1 goal kicker)

?

Captains:
1. Nicholls
2. Fitzpatrick
3. Sticks

CHFs:
1. Walls
2. Sticks

FFs:
1. Vallence
2. Jezza
3. Sticks
But, I must admit I didn't see Vallence and I'd forgotten about Fev. But given the longevity and sheer volume of goals, there a case to be made for Sticks. Id still say now that of the ones I've seen I'd put Fev first and Jezza / Sticks next.

Thanks.
I can see that Walls was a more innovative CHF; Sticks more traditional and predictable: lead & mark with 3 guys hanging off his shoulders. But, if they were lined up in the schoolyard wall, I'd probably pick Sticks first for CHF.
Fev the best pure FF.

Fev best kick for goal I have seen at the club and probably up there with Kouta for having X Factor.

I know it is an opinion based business but in my view Robbie Walls was an excellent CHF but in my view wasn't as good as Sticks

Sticks after Big John was the most influential carlton player I saw

Sticks wasn't best but highly influential on the team performance and Big John even more influential

Used to take more contested marks per game than some teams do these days. Seriously underrated by some who forget how good he was when we were down between 89-92

Always amazes me how McLure never gets mentioned. He is clear 3 at CHF
Fev was the best full forward we had given goal avg and quality of those around him

And I'm sure I remember him slotting into CHB when required and playing well, much more all round player than Fev, although Sticks also did well in the ruck.

Fev was our best ever FF in my opinion. His pace off the mark for a guy his size was just incredible.
Such a shame his talent was wasted in the dark ages. What we would do to have a young Fev coming through the ranks now

He actuall started his career with us as a back pocket minding the resting ruckman as they did in those days. His talent and COURAGE was evident early which saw him promoted to the hotseat at CHF.It was obvious he could not only handle the pressure but relished it.................i see that in the kids coming through now, they want the pressure. For instance PetSet wanted to come to Melbourne and Crippa wants to stay in Melbourne. They just love it.Remember,McClure was a Sydney boy.

He'd want to be very different to the original young Fev or he'd be out very quickly. I couldn't see Bolton putting up with the crap earlier coaches did, did more harm than good at our club in my opinion.
