Let's hope he has a break out year this year.

Personally, I think Jack will turn it up a notch or two this year to have one up on his brother, nothing like a bit of sibling rivalry.

Now all we need is McKay's brother to cross over for peanuts so we have 3 sets on our list.

Midfield continues to grow
Quote:
IF last night’s JLT Community Series opener is anything to go by, Carlton has a clear focus on spreading the midfield load in 2019.

While Patrick Cripps once again played a starring role at the coalface, it was the work of his younger teammates which had Blues fans excited about what could come this year and beyond.

Zac Fisher was one of those players who shone at Ikon Park, recording 26 disposals and four tackles in the nine-point win.

Speaking to media at Carlton’s Community Camp today, Fisher said there had been a big focus on establishing some strength in numbers, starting with last night’s “exciting” win.

“It’s always good to win the first one and I thought it was a good, consistent performance from all,” Fisher said.

“As a midfield group, we took a lot of pressure off ‘Crippa’, who still had a good game himself.

“The likes of Walsh, Dow, ‘Samo’, Cuningham just to say a few all took the load off of him. They were good signs.”

The Blues added to its midfield depth over the off-season with some key acquisitions, and Will Setterfield and Sam Walsh last night showed their immediate and future potential.

The zippy midfielder said the way to get the best out of co-captain Cripps was through a deep pool of midfielders making an impact, as shown in bursts last night.

After the other night I’ve seen more than a few neutrals talk with some fear about the possibilities of a future Cripps, Walsh, Setterfield, Fisher, SPS, Dow, Kennedy, LOB midfield.

The potential is massive, it’s about application now.

Big bodied mids who can hold their own against any opposing group of mids: Cripps, Setterfield, Silvagni, Dow, and Kennedy.
In fact one big bodied mi called Cripps owns them.

Add some speed and class by their side in SPS, Fisher, Cuningham.

Wingmen who can run at pace all day and link up: Walsh and OBrien.

Add some old heads: Murphy Curnow and the ruck rover Kreuzer (another huge midfield body).

Formidable...and most important, there's pressure on spots in the team with Gibbons and Stocker also eyeing a spot.

We are going places this year, barring injury.

Worth a bump given our current midfield woes.

It's all well and good to lament our 'thin' midfield, and say that we should've drafted <x> instead of who we got, but consider the midfielders we've selected in every draft since our KPP haul in 2015.

Quote:
2015
#23 - David Cuningham (around the mark)

2016
#6 - Sam Petrevski-Seton (exactly where predicted)
#27 - Zac Fisher (Little earlier than expected)

2017
#3 - Paddy Dow (Exactly where predicted)
#10 - Lochie O'Brien (Little earlier than expected - it's well known that Hunter Clark was the one we wanted but was gone already)
Trade - Matthew Kennedy (originally a 1st round pick selected where expected)

2018
#1 - Sam Walsh (say no more)
#19 - Liam Stocker (Around the mark)
Trade - Will Setterfield (regarded by some at the time he was drafted as a potential #1)
Supplemental - Michael Gibbons (best VFL midfielder for the previous few years)

2019
#17 - Brodie Kemp (Later than expected)
#20 - Sam Philp (Little earlier than expected)
PSD - Jack Martin (Free hit due to GCS' idiocy)

2020
#41 - Jack Carroll ("Steal of the draft")
FA - Zac Williams (potential A-grader who cost us no picks)
Cheap trade - Lachie Fogarty

So we've brought in the following midfielders who were not duds at the time they came here:
Cuningham
SPS
Fisher
Dow
O'Brien
Kennedy
Walsh (only one all can agree is a win)
Stocker
Setterfield
Gibbons
Kemp
Philp
Martin
Carroll
Williams
Fogarty

The common themes when looking at this history are:
- After 2015 when we sorted our KPP out, there has been a strong emphasis on getting the best midfield talent in possible through drafts and trades (extending to failed trades for Shiel, Cognilio, Papley and Oliver).
- None of these guys were duds when they joined us. Many were selected when the 'experts' predicted, and while some were selected a bit later and some a bit earlier, it's pretty close.
- For various reasons, none bar Walsh have demonstrated improvement or at least return on investment since they arrived.

This tells me that our midfield woes stem not from the players we have brought in, but the club's poor development of them after they arrived, both mental and physical (which includes the inability to keep them on the park).

So next time anyone thinks of lamenting that "we should've drafted Cerra/LDU/Worpel/Duursma etc", just remember that they'd probably be duds here too, just like Josh Kennedy would've likely amounted to little had he stayed here.

Hopefully Kemp, Philp and Carrol turn out to be quality mids.

I think what is being said in the post above that is if we drafted Nat Fyfe back in the day he would’ve turned out to be Richard Tambling under our development program.....good luck to the guys you mention. Maybe they get their own personal trainers, is my take away message.

In a nutshell, yes.

It is a great read and it makes my point even more valid , you have no involvement at Carlton in any coaching capacity or any other capacity, and you been a normal passionate supporter who loves their club , you have been able to see this development issue like thousands of other supporters !!

But we have a so called coaching staff getting paid millions as collective , Chris look at me judd one the greatest midfielders all of time as a football director , and none of them can see this or work hard enough to work with the talent we have on our books , and that is the major fail year after year after year !!

And you can’t put cripps and Walsh as proof our development works , these boys are just freaks of nature and are exception to the rule and they were always going to succeed!!
