Carlton's Patrick Cripps has suffered a stress reaction in his lower back that will sideline the young midfielder for up to 12 weeks.

The 21-year-old experienced discomfort during Wednesday's training session and scans today revealed the injury.

“Unfortunately this pre-season setback means Patrick will be out of action for up to 12 weeks,” Carlton’s Head of Football Andrew McKay said.

“While the news is disappointing, the positive is we have diagnosed the condition early, minimising his time on the sidelines.

"Given his professionalism and determination, we are confident Patrick will be ready for the 2017 pre-season competition."

Absolutely. This should have made up SOS mind. And for the 2nd round pick The Hulk.

If this is the same injury that McKay had, he is in deepsh for the best part of the year.
It just shows again that we need to stock up on mids and more mids.
Imagine had Gibbs left and we lost Cripps. Murphy has missed a lot of games through injury as well.
We are thin on the ground.
Hope this is not too serious for the kid and the club.

let cripps take all the time in the world. he is a super player already but has 10 years ahead of him ... there is simply no rush for him even if it takes the season.

his body needs to mature into the football he plays. he is way ahead of where I would expect any 20 year old who plays the game the way he is

INJURED Carlton star Patrick Cripps is in no danger of missing round one, according to Blues leadership group member Sam Docherty.

Cripps was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his lower back late last month, an injury that is expected to sideline him until late February.

The Blues midfielder was an onlooker during the club's pre-season training camp at Southport Football Club on the Gold Coast on Sunday and will be on a modified program for most of the summer.

But Docherty said he had no doubts Cripps would be ready for Carlton's round one clash against Richmond on March 23.

"He's a resilient bloke and he's very professional. The aim is for round one and he's doing his rehab according to that," Docherty said.

"He'll be fine, I guarantee he'll be ready to go.

Think I'll err on the side of caution and consider any games Cripps plays next year a bonus 8)

Carlton ruckman Andrew Phillips sidelined with foot injury

Andrew Phillips has a foot injury that will sideline him for most of the pre-season.

Carlton ruckman Andrew Phillips could miss the start of the season proper after the discovery last week of a hot spot in his foot.

Phillips, a success story in 2016 in his first season at Princes Park after moving from Greater Western Sydney, could be sidelined for at least eight weeks, which would be a major setback for his round-one availability against Richmond in March.

Scans late last week revealed the stress reaction, which could have led to a fracture if he continued pre-season training despite soreness.

Phillips will require further scans next month, but his minimum rehabilitation period is believed to be four weeks, meaning he is unlikely to be a pre-season practice match participant.

Phillips, 25, played 16 games for the Blues last year either side of a hamstring injury, after playing his first 14 senior games with the Giants over three seasons.
