Its been ages since I have posted - not sure if this is the right forum.
I was reading this article today (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-06-01/unsigned-blues-face-nervous-wait-on-futures)and was stunned when I saw the following line.

Quote:
The side that defeated Geelong contained just three of the Blues' selections from the past eight national drafts (Rowe, Patrick Cripps and Jacob Weitering).

That means that the breakdown looks something like this

Drafted in the past 8 Drafts
Rowe
Cripps
Weitering

Drafted pre 2008
Gibbs
Murphy
Kreuzer
Simpson
Walker
Armfield

Rookies
Curnow
White
Casboult

International rookie
Tuohy

Traded From other clubs
Thomas
Everitt
Docherty
Lamb
Plowman
Gorringe
Wright
Kerridge
Sumner

Its comforting to know that SOS is back.

It is a little bit "sky is falling" stuff given several of our top young picks are injured or sick. Also, if you look at the trade in list there are a few younger top 10 draft picks in Sumner, Plowman, Goringe and then 2nd and 3rd rounders like Docherty etc.

It was just sticking the knife into our draft recruiting, which we already knew.

Docherty, Plowman, Cripps, Weitering, Byrne, C Curnow, McKay, SOSOS and Sumner. All are under 23, all can seriously play, some are (or will be) stars. Add in, say, a Tomlinson or a Patton from GWS and all of a sudden we have a fantastic core group who are 23 and under.

What's interesting is that there's only one full-time on-baller (Cripps) in that list, and our on-ball brigade aren't getting any younger. We need to address this next.

True, but I don't necessarily think onballers need to be top draft picks. Yes, it helps, But some of the really good durable mids have been second and third rounders. There are some good ones available and can be trained into elite.

It wasn't really meant to be a sky is falling type post, or a comment of the age of the players. More a comment on a wasted 8 years (really 7 because the SOS draft does'nt count yet 10 games in) at the draft table. I knew our recruiting has been awful - Its just really put into perspective exactly how awful.

Also note that 1/3 of the team is already from the SOS era.

I'm willing to cut our recruiters some slack (not a lot though  ) given the GWS & GC compromised drafts, but we seriously have to get better at our drafting.

Good get Navy trading last year contributed of course

Yarran was a first rounder who we got the pick for Cunningham
Menzel also a first round pick
Bell a rookie but in the end worth a lot more

Bokehurst and Buckley being up unavailable skews it a bit too

Didn't also help that our 5 draftees have all been injured

Even in the dark years we have done well off rookie list -if you add Jamo to that list shows how well we have been served by it -especially if you include Carrazzo and Bell last year

International rookies have been good too given over that period we had setanta touchy and Byrne And maybe Sheehan
