We also didn't have to sell the farm to get him. The problem with the Judd trade in comparison is that I am not even sure we came out ahead in that trade. Easy to say in hindsight but that script is yet to be written until all of the players involved retire. The fact is that WCE made a GF with two the players in that trade being central figures. We came nowhere close to that.
That's an unfair comparison and sort of implies we could have made a GF with Kennedy and pick #4.
I agree the Diesel trade was better because of the reasons stated.
However, the Judd trade was the right thing for the club to do at the time.
The sad reality is Judd was joining a much worse team, and importantly, a much worse club than the environment Diesel found himself in.
Imagine Judd in his mid-20s arrivng at Carlton at the same time Diesel did. Oh boy wowee!
Don't agree with this. By the time Diesel had joined Carlton for the start of the '92 season, we'd just had three of our leanest years in two decades, finishing between 8th and 11th with more losses than wins. We were turning over players in a big way, with '93 being a bit of a surprise year for us (as it was for the bombers) in a competition that had no real dominant team(s). I recall those these vividly as a dark period for Carlton.
We weren't as bad during Juddy's arrival as we are today (mid table with some decent prospects on our list, aka end of '91). I'd go so far as to say if the Judd trade was being contemplated right now, he'd have picked Collingwood, maybe Melbourne, but very unlikely Carlton or Essendon*.
