Dear Rocco,

Let's start with the obvious. No one at Carlton is or could be happy with the 2015 win-loss record, nor the ladder position. It's been a challenging year for everyone, and in light of that, I especially want to thank you for your membership and support.

That said, I'm incredibly confident and optimistic about our future, and what comes next. There are heartening green shoots, particularly the emergence of some of our younger players including Patrick Cripps, who finished runner-up in the AFL’s Rising Star. We are so immensely proud of the way he has carried himself on and off the field this year.

The inglorious ladder position is – in reality – the perfect opportunity for us to kick-start the rebuild. It gives the Club and the list management team some certainty. And it helps us to be bold and aggressive – as we have to be – to get the depth of talent onto the list that we clearly need. Bold and aggressive too in securing as many early picks as we can to build something that lasts.

You know that we've spent the past 12 months making significant changes. Putting the right people in the right places. A relatively new president, an emerging new Board, a new CEO and management team, new list manager and a recently appointed senior coach with a fresh coaching team around him.

Please be clear: this has all been about resetting the foundation for a successful rebuild at Carlton. Just about every member I speak with has urged us to take this path. Again, there will be no quick fixes and no tricking ourselves.

In terms of the next steps, we now need to make good decisions for Carlton, for our growth and for our future. To that end, this week we have formally submitted a request to the AFL for a priority draft pick. The priority ‘special assistance’ rule (for a pick) is there to help equalise the playing field, by giving teams that perform poorly an additional selection. We certainly believe that Carlton should be given strong consideration on this by the AFL Commission. Moreover, a priority selection will obviously assist our rebuild by helping Carlton improve quicker – and a competitive Carlton is vital for a healthy AFL competition.

I also guarantee we will do everything we can to keep Matthew Kreuzer, who as a free agent has the right to assess his options. We know full well what a fit ‘Kreuz’ means to Carlton people. We have to be smart with all of our player calls though, (and we need good, clear information), so we'll keep working hard on that one over the coming weeks to get the best, long-term outcome for the Club.

A sentiment expressed to me so often (by so many Blues supporters) is frustration over the loss of players through the years. I understand it and appreciate it – but we simply can't change history, just as we can't directly change free agency. What we can do though is continue to create an environment where people (players) want to stay and learn – an environment that makes others want to join us. Which is – as you know – a big part of the decision to appoint Brendon Bolton.

I also understand that Blues supporters have been hurting in terms of the last 10+ years of results. But again, we can't change that. It’s time to put a line in the sand and look ahead. Look forward to the growth, the rebuild, and the green-shoots of our rise. Look forward to us getting fit and hardened over the summer, and having a better run than 19-20 players out with injury, as we had last week. Look forward to us recruiting exciting young talent and developing it. And look forward to us being bold and 'having a crack' at everything we do.

Let me also acknowledge though that actions obviously speak louder than words. I have no doubt that we will be judged on what we do – not on what we say – as we bring all of this together. But again, be encouraged by all that we've done so far (our actions) in setting the foundations (and ‘breaking the mould’).

Finally, your membership is vital. We need you – we really do. If we are to grow as a Club we need our existing members renewing and new members (from our enormous supporter base) to jump on. We've listened to the feedback on prices, access and the process of renewals – and we've acted on it. We will keep you informed (first, where possible) of all that we’re doing. Your renewals will be forwarded in the week of the AFL grand final , and again, I very much hope that you stay 'Bound by Blue'!

Kind Regards,

Steven Trigg

Picks 1, 2 and 3.

I could accept that.

I like it. No mention of the last 150 years, past legends or # of premierships - only the future  .

I think we've finally turned the corner.

Great tactical move. Exactly what Melbourne did last year.
If you want to raise taxes by 10%, tell the public you're going to raise them by 20%... When, in the end, they only increase by 10% it seems like a win.

We will be denied the priority pick, but strengthens our position in getting Band 1 combo for Kreuz as a consolation.

Correct. No way known we will get both Band1 Comp and Priority but we may well get one of them (at pick 2 or 3, depending on AFL shenanigans).

Trigg, I judge you solely on the outcome of what happens with Krueser over the trade period against what you've said to date.

I think it's more to try to protect the number 1 pick should the AFL give serious consideration to granting a PP to Brisbane. I don't believe they have a gentlemen's agreement regarding who they will both draft respectively, nor do I think it would be binding even if they did.

No grandstanding in da meedya, no looking like Donkeys, just down to business behind the scenes and communicating it in a direct fashion to the people that matter!!!
