I don’t give bolts much credit at all for us doing well over the last 5 weeks. To me it highlights what a crap coach he was.

Too stubborn to change anything when it has clearly not worked for near on 2 years and seemed to place winning way down the list of priorities, without realizing the detrimental effect it was having on the team and was going to continue to have.

The track we were going down, we would of lost young players sick of being belted every week, older guys retiring prematurely because they had a gutful and being appealing to 0 guns from other clubs.

Might be a lovely guy, but kept doubling down on his methods and philosophy despite ample evidence it wasn’t working and paid the price.

Apparently Bolts is not in a great place. I hope things pick up for him.

Richardson, Lyon, Worsfold (just threw him in) all had their time at Carlton.

Why would you go back to any of them ?

My read on the Bolton era is he helped the players and the team develop in a number of areas, but they were all unfortunately defensive in nature. In his first season at the club, he introduced a "defence first" game plan, and defensive zones and structures that resulted in our average score against per game dropping from 107 in 2015 to 89 in 2016 when he took over.

He knew that once the basic defensive game plan was bedded down, he needed to ramp up our attacking game plan in year 2. Particular after copping a moderate caning from the press that we had no attacking flair.

BUT, unfortunately he was unable to do this. He tweaked and adjusted, and probably made a few fairly major adjustments in 2017. But for various reasons, including lack of enough decent players, it resulted in a wooden spoon. WE lost our ability to defend, and we remained unable to score. Our average score against jumped back up to 93 points in 2017 and up again to 107 points in 2018.

All the while, our average points scored for per game fell to a deplorable 61 points in 2018, compared to 71 points in his first season 2016.

I think Bolton lost his nerve in 2017, after he tried to adjust game plan to be more attacking, our performances dipped in that season, & he tried to adjust back again. He should've stuck to a more attacking development plan, in the knowledge that the players had solid defensive structures instilled in them during the 2016 season. And he should've trusted in the process that so long as talented players had the defensive basics in the skill set, they would respond more favourably to his serious and intense coaching style, so long as he showed them he was supportive of letting them play to their strengths.

He suffered due to injuries to key players, & this definitely impacted our ladder position each year. But only by a spot or two. But I reckon he'll look back when dust settles, & realise that he was far too defensive in his mindset & attitude, and this rubbed off on his players.

I think it is clear he just wasn't head coach material.
Some coaches are good at being assistants. Not all make the transition to head coach.
Richo may be another one.

It’s why for mine there needs to be a better acknowledged pathway from State leagues etc where they’ve exhibited the ability to head an entire program. Its surprising how those candidates seem so easily overlooked in favor of assistants. It’s I think a reason why Teague has been such a change as he’s had that experience.

Bucks once said being an assistant is like being a grandparent, and head coach is the parent.

If the termination was handled well enough for the bridge to remain intact, he’d be a good assistant. But, if Juddy had anything to do with it, he’s probably one foot off the edge.

I think Bolts should take his time, then maybe approach a team with a Tassie connection to play a role - either Hawks or North.
He might not have been a success with us, but he's good enough to stay involved at AFL level.
That way he can maintain the Tassie links (which are clearly so important to him on a personal level), while not retreating back to local footy.. which might feel like a bit of a humbling backwards step.

Such a shame that men of status and power fell for the Old sales pitch and cliches and one liners.
I just sit and wonder how much better this team would have been if we had gone through the rebuild with someone other than Bolton.

People kept telling me what he said at presser was different to what was behind closed doors but it is clear now it wasn't and he was miles out of his depth.

I don't blame him for the last few years of tripe I blame the people who put him there and kept him there when blind Freddie could see he was way in over his head and was just sprouting crap each week

Hearing our list manager will be shown the door. Cain Liddle has it in for SOS and what Cain Liddle wants, Cain Liddle gets and he wants him out of Ikon park.

We have heard snippets during the season about SOS with Freo connection but to be shown the door....Holy Cow.
This is too big to be true.

Does this mean that SOS fails to land Carlton the big fish 2 years running?

Cain Liddle is a gun IMHO.
If true, I'm backing him in to make the right decisions for the future of the club.

I am a big fan though. Also of Liddle's. I just hope it ain't true.
