Personnel issues aside, a percentage of 63 strongly suggests that whatever we are trying to do is failing miserably.

It appeared we adjusted after our horrible early rounds to improve our defensive structures and be harder to play against.

This went out the window yesterday and our defence was Auskick level.

Our lack of execution of the basics is what irritates me and really is inexcusable at this level.

We complain that our mid-20s players aren't good enough and that's the main reason we're shit. Let's look at the 23-26 year olds.

Docherty - recruited by MM
Cripps - Recruited by MM
Byrne - MM
Plowman - Bolton
Shaw - Bolton
Phillips - Bolton
Lamb - Bolton
Kerridge - Bolton
Mullet - Bolton
Oshea - Bolton

What's the point of a list re-build that needs re-building 3 years later?

What a load of shit. The coach does the drafting now, does he?
FMD, you blokes will invent anything to kick Bolton.

As for those bemoaning Gowers, he admits he wasn't as committed as he could have been at Carlton. Remember when the players were doing consecutive 6.00am beach swims to due some not turning up? Have a guess who the player was that was consistently late?
Yes it's good to hold on to talent but commitment has to be absolute as well. Especially from rookies who have been given a life line.

You're contradicting yourself there, BV - big time!

I think the issue basically gets back to the skill/talent level of our outside users is atrocious.
They are either too inexperienced under pressure or just no good under pressure.

How many decades do we have left before we can actually judge the performances like its a professional sporting organisation, without being a fickle glory hunter supporter?...Asking for a friend.

Funny how we have injuries after recruiting all the GWS sicknotes.

Yeah, that was my frustration as well. The midfield monstering yesterday always meant we were going to lose. But there's been something a little 'broken' about how the defense has played a lot of this year. I came into the year thinking our defense was a relative strength. But clearly something structural has changed. It can't be just injuries.

so two things.

No, judge Carlton now as the club that has been atrocious for much of eighteen years...but do not hold Bolts responsible for all the years he was not there.

So we should not have recruited Marchbank, Pickett & Phillips. I disagree.

Yes agree structural problems in defence and defence method but a backline like yesterday don't give you much run carry or attacking OR DEFENSIVE nous see OShea Rowe Mullet Thomas jones - cf - Docherty Byrne Weitering Marchbank - when backline playing well last year all were making good contribution and Docherty was exceptional
Rowe jones and OShea in particular don't deliver ball well by hand or foot and aren't great decision makers and don't create any run to our advantage

you really cant have more than one of them -we have 3 Brisbane the other team to win one game haven't got 3 of these in their backline - no afl backline can afford to have them in it -let alone when you have three quarters of your midfield on L plates

Also Simmo not surprisingly isn't as effective as previously because of age but also because of dochertys absence so not getting anywhere near the nous or run or even calmness of last year in the back half

OShea for example gave away 4 free kicks in the Melbourne 50 yesterday and was very lucky not to give away a 5th early on when hitting Hogan front on in first quarter - how possibly can you win when one player gives it back like that

Cameron Bruce is in charge of defence? Who was in charge last year?

Good points, although O'Shea was victim of umpiring interpretation of the week. One that interestingly didn't seem to apply to the Melbourne defenders blocking in the marking contests.

I'd also add that while Daisy has been pretty good, he struggles to actually defend. We were slaughtered by Tom McDonald and their medium forwards.

Does anyone know who was meant to be McDonald? Because if it was Jones, that's another defensive shocker he's chalked up this year.

Marchbank is a good get. Dury is still out on Picket and Phillips. I'm not going to judge Bolts on past mistakes. That'd be stupid.

Comparing SPS & Fisher's first 20 games disposals and contested possessions, and Dow's games to date, with Gibbs looks pretty good.
